A chartered jet with 24 crew members of a U.S. Navy plane took off April 12 from Hainan Island, China bringing to an end a tense 12 day negotiation between U.S. and Chinese diplomats.

The release of the U.S. Navy crew occured after the U.S. expressed regret for the collision between the Chinese fighter jet and U.S. spy plane and the subsequent emergency landing in China.

The crew has now been released, with Chinese and U.S. negotiators agreeing on the details for dismantling and flying home the crippled plane.

Beijing hopes that ties with Washington, which were badly strained by the incident, can now improve.
