Manas International Airport
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

 • U.S. troops are refurbishing this airport, built by the Soviet Union with a 13,000-foot runway to accommodate the largest bombers in the former Soviet fleet. Up to 3,000 U.S. military personnel are expected to be stationed there by June.

 • The airport is located 19 miles outside of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan and only 300 miles from the Chinese border. Afghanistan is 400 miles away.

 • The base will be home to a variety of aircraft from the coalition, including KC-135 equivalent refueling aircraft, C-130 transports, other cargo aircraft and six U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 attack fighters. C-17 transports have already used the base as a refueling hub.

 • Six French Mirage fighter jets also will deploy to Manas and French military personnel have assisted U.S. personnel in refurbishing the airport.

 • The airfield is informally called Ganci Air Base after New York City Fire Department Chief Peter Ganci, who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
