Bagram Air Base
Bagram, Afghanistan

 • A former Soviet air base built north of Kabul on the Shomali plain, the base is now home to U.S., British and other coalition troops involved in the Afghan campaign.

 • The base is home to units from the Army's 10th Mountain Division and 101st Airborne, both of which participated in Operation Anaconda. It's also the main base for the various Army Special Forces units in Afghanistan.

 • Bagram also will be the main base of 1,700 British Royal Marines from the 45th Commando Group that Great Britain is sending to Afghanistan. Those troops are in addition to the British Royal Marines already in Kabul as part of the international peacekeeping force patrolling the Afghan capital.

 • Canadian troops, including those that participated in Operation Anaconda, also are based at Bagram.

 • Troops from other nations involved in the peacekeeping force, including Germany, The Netherlands, Finland, Austria, Turkey and Denmark, are based at Bagram.

 • Bagram has a 9,700-foot runway and a number of aircraft are based there, including helicopters flown by the Army's 160th Special Aviation Unit, known as the "Nightstalkers." A small group of A-10 "Warthog" ground attack aircraft also has been deployed to the base.
