The collision of a U.S. Navy submarine with the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fisheries research and training vessel, on February 9, 2001, raised questions about the Navy's operating procedures. Among the questions is whether 16 civilian visitors aboard the submarine affected the crew's performance. Nine Japanese aboard the Ehime Maru died when the vessel sank following the collision. |
