The last mission of the Hawkbill

On its final mission, the nuclear submarine USS Hawkbill journeyed underneath the polar ice cap. The mission, a joint expedition of the U.S. Navy and the National Science Foundation, navigated the treacherous waters and ice canals above the Arctic Circle. Along with the scientists and submariners, a two-person CNN crew came aboard the Hawkbill to film a documentary on the unusual environment of a cramped submarine.
