More than 10 months after the start of a devastating livestock illness, Britain says it is free of foot-and-mouth disease. The last remaining suspected area, Northumberland in northeastern England, has been given the all-clear. During the epidemic, the number of cases topped 2,000, four million sheep and cows were slaughtered, and the cost to the economy was estimated in the billions.
