Taiwan recently test-fired
three of its U.S.-made Patriot missiles in the first of a battery
of trials for its defensive weapon system. The show of strength
came as China conducted war games at nearby Beijing-held Dongshan
Island.
While China and Taiwan routinely carry out military drills, the
tests are likely to inflame tensions between the two. A new alliance
between former Taiwanese president Lee
Teng-hui and current president Chen
Shui-bian may also strain ties further.
After a tough year in office, Chen of the Democratic
Progressive Party is now courting Lee, who is known for his
pro-independent Taiwan stance.
The goal -- to win over Taiwan's parliament, the Legislative Yuan,
which is still dominated by Lee Teng-hui's political party, the
Kuomintang.
