| Iran: A western refuge Iran has attempted to close its borders to prevent its 1.5 million Afghan refugee population from growing further. However its eastern border is a porous one. An estimated 200,000 Afghans have arrived in the country since the beginning of last year via backcountry routes. | Afghanistan Catherine Bertine, Executive Director of the WFP, said around 52,000 metric tons of food per month is needed to feed the hungry in Afghanistan. She said the WFP was currently delivering 900 metric tons a day, and was confident deliveries will be increased. | Pakistan: Hospitality fatigue Pakistan has the largest population of Afghan refugees in the world, totaling two million. The border with Afghanistan remains closed, but those managing to cross illegally will be assisted in border camps. Pakistani officials have hinted that it might open its gates if a flood of refugees arrive.
