Plane goes down in Queens, New York

The quiet of a Veterans Day holiday morning was shattered when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed into a residential area near John F. Kennedy International Airport on November 12, 2001. Fire and smoke billowed through the New York borough of Queens, shaking a city already reeling from the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. In October 2002, investigators have ruled out sabotage, engine failure and bad weather, but they still have not determined exactly what caused the passenger flight carrying more than 250 people to fall from the sky.
