Fifty years ago, on October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was founded, ushering in a new era in the history of the Chinese nation.

In the ensuing half-century, the ancient land of China witnessed fundamental socio-economic transformation on a scale rarely seen in human evolution.

The Communist Party has now ruled China for a full half-century. It has been a half-century plagued with discontent and disunity and a half-century in which the ideals of the Chinese people have marched toward destruction.

It has also been a half-century in which the Chinese people have studied and learned from the West even as they inherit the legacies of their own culture.
