The nearly two dozen U.S. Navy ships in the Persian Gulf bring with them about 14,000 sailors and Marines. This includes the U.S.S. Independence aircraft carrier battle group, the U.S.S. George Washington aircraft carrier battle group and roughly 20 other ships including five ships capable of launching cruise missiles at targets in Iraq.

Of the five cruise missile capable ships, four are surface ships and one is a submarine.

If any augmentaion of forces there is required, additional Air Force aircraft can be moved to the Middle-East in about 48 hours.
