SLAM (Standoff Land Attack Missiles)

SLAM cruise missile

DESCRIPTION: The SLAM is a new long-range cruise missile carried by the Navy's carrier-based F-18 Hornet. A SLAM missile was first used in combat during air strikes in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1995.

The missile is a "stand off" weapon, meaning it can be launched far away from the target, greatly limiting the risk to pilots.

The missile has a video camera in it which sends a signal back to the pilot, who manually locks the missile onto its intended target. The missiles cost $720,000 each.
