Measuring celebrity popularity
Forbes.com has an interesting article about the most valuable celebrities to the tabloids and gossip magazines.

The site looked at the top six celebrity publications and compared newsstand sales (usually an impulse buy, and extremely profitable for the publication) of particular celebrity covers with each publication's average newsstand sales.

Who was No. 1? I'm not going to reveal it here, but let's just say she was on a long-running TV show and became a classic woman wronged.

But just as interesting, given the current circus, is how Britney Spears fared. Despite "18 single covers during the six-month period, which also [made] her the most popular cover-subject choice," wrote Forbes.com's Lacey Rose, "... glossies collectively sold some 600,000 issues below average, placing her last among cover subjects when it comes to sales."

And yet everybody keeps coming back for more. Sigh.

Britney, meet Bruce
With the latest Britney Spears frenzy going on, for some reason I keep thinking of a lyric from "Spare Parts," the brutally unsentimental Bruce Springsteen song:

"Now Janey walked that baby across the floor night after night
But she was a young girl and she missed the party lights ..."

Of course, Springsteen's Janey, like most of his characters, don't have the benefit of the money or fame Spears does. They pay a price (witness many of the people on "The River"). One wonders what will happen to Ms. Spears.

Nothing, I imagine.
