Celebrities can be ugly -- and so can everybody else
Nice column by Virginia Heffernan in yesterday's New York Times on the desire to pick at celebrity photographs -- and see celebrities at their worst.
We may crave beauty, but there's always that demon in our hearts that yearns to tear down the pedestal. What's striking in the Internet age is the proliferation of such nasty commentary -- and photos to match. Is it a response to too much Photoshopping and publicist puffery? The idea that fame for certain beautiful people (usually beautiful women) is undeserved? Or just an opportunity to vent our inner 6-year-olds? Whatever it is, it's as old as human nature.
You need to see them at their worst. Nine times out of ten celebrity pictures are beautiful and glamorous. However, NOBODY is perfect, and we should not be culled into believing otherwise.
Since when has reality been so daunting. It is good to know we really are not on such a different level.
Many celebrities manage to have huge careers without ending up all over the internet or in endless tabloids. These people manage themselves in a particular way and know what they are in for when they choose that life. I hardly feel sorry for any of them.
With all the horrible acting (if we can even call some of it that) so many stars' careers are based on their looks. It comes with the territory. And if they are serious actors, they can stick to theater. Becoming a "movie star" (or television) makes many people a LOT of money and if they didn't want the attention, again, they can stick to theater. Plus, some of those "ugly" shots aren't ugly at all - they're just normal. Human. Like the rest of us. |
