Random thoughts on 'The Sopranos'
  • No television show -– and very few movies –- have ever used music as well as "The Sopranos," from the opening theme ("Woke Up This Morning" by A3) to incidental background bits, right through to the music over the credits. I want David Chase's iPod.

  • Much has been made of the show’s violence, but for me the most powerful –- and often shocking -- scenes are the ones between Tony and his family. The interplay in the arguments between Tony (James Gandolfini) and Carmela (Edie Falco) in Season 4's closer "Whitecaps" was as brilliant -– and draining -– as anything I've ever seen.

  • David Chase has long said he wants to make movies, but I hope he realizes he may never top "The Sopranos." Indeed, a movie is almost certainly a step down; on "The Sopranos," Chase (and his staff) had the time and the space to create the equivalent of a first-rate novel, complete with colorful incidental characters, loose threads and layers upon layers of meaning.

  • I'm not even going to hazard a guess as to how the show will end. Which makes it all the more enticing.

  • And for those (like me) who will undergo "Sopranos" withdrawal, consider "The Sopranos: The Book" (Time Inc. Home Entertainment), a beautifully designed and well-written history of the show; or watch the "Law & Order" marathon Monday, which will feature shows starring "Sopranos" cast members. (Or, of course, you can watch the DVD collections.)

    Sleep well, Tony.
  • Just like that, Tony comes into my life and steals my heart! And just like that, Bada Bing! he's gone. It's been a great ride, Tony, and whatever your fate on Sunday, thanks for the memories!
The "duality" of Tony... One of my favorite episodes that shows this is when Tony took Meadow to look at colleges and then slipped away to dispose of a "rat" hidden away in the whitness protection program
The BEST episode ever was Pauli Walnuts and Christofah in the Oine Barrens in NJ running from the Russian Mob guys...I laughed myslef silly that night
One of my faviorte Soprano episodes was when the FBI was bugging the Soprano home. The way the music cross faded between Police's "Ill be Watching You," and the theme to "Peter Gunn."

Great cinema. Sopranos will be missed!
The Sopranos is the only reason I subscribe to HBO. It is definitely going to be missed in my household!
My favorite episodes were (1)The drug intervention with Chrissy when they jumped on him. (2)At Mother Soprano memorial when Chrissy was rambling. I hate all my fellows got whacked...Jackie Jr, Lillo Brancato(shame) and Chrissy.
My favorite memories of the Sopranos is going to a friends ( with my other friends)house every Sunday night and have a few drinks and eating Stromboli. I loved the Pine Barrens epi the best. Now what am I gonna do Sunday's @ 9 :(
The Sopranos has never been predictable and that is what keeps me tuning in. For example, will Tony lose it all and go crazy like King Lear? Will he die in that little room where we left him last week like Jim Bowie at the Alamo taking out a couple of Phil's goons as he goes? Or will David Chase have shot multiple endings and have viewers vote on Tony's fate online during the first half hour and then Chase plays the majority's version? Like I say, utterly impossible to predict the outcome.
    Favorite moment:

In the first season when Carmela hears Meadow sneaking into the house. Believing her curfew-breakin daughter is actually an intruder, she immediately grabs an AK-47 from a kitchen cabinet, and calmly pulls the charging handle, readying herself and the weapon for whatever is lurking outside.
What a brilliant way to illustrate the absurdity of the Sopranos' existence: she (1) assumes it's an intruder and (2) gets a battle rifle ready, not a baseball bat, knife, or handgun and (3) handles the weapon so adroitly. Clearly, Tony or one of his crew taught her well.
Not to mention the fact that I think Edie Falco is pretty hot, and any woman who can handle firearms confidently gets high marks in my book.
I also loved the "heaven only knows" fourth (?) season opener.
One of the funniest moments I remember is when they killed off Ralphie and had him in the bath tub. Chrissy grabs Ralph and his wig comes off. Tony... "What you didn't know, you're so high on crack it could be your mother's muff on his head" or words to that effect. Will also miss the constant scowl on Silvio.
I can't wait for Sunday, but I'm also dreading it knowing the Sopranos will be over. Might as well sell the TV Monday . . .
JUNIORS CLASSIC "THE FEDS ARE SO FAR UP MY &*$, I CAN TASTE BRILLE CREAM" WILL LIVE FOREVER...THANKS HBO FOR A GREAT SERIES AND LETTING THE WORLD KNOW THAT THERE IS STILL GREAT TELEVISION TO BE MADE WITHOUT REALITY "STARS"
My favorite events and plot lines in the Sopranos were:

Big Pussy's effort to pursuade A.J. to particiate in his confirmation (and assume his role and responsibilities in the family)even while Big Pussy suffered from the guilt guilt of his own Judas-like disloyalty to the family because he was wired.

Tony's dream sequence of sleeping with the fishes in the episodes after Big Pussy was killed. James Gandolfini was able to engage us all in Tony's consistent anxiety and depression. In that sequence, he revealed the tensions between good and evil that shaped his experience and personality.

The struggles between Tony and Janice over their mother's house and all it represented in their lives.

Carmella's grief when Tony was shot by Uncle Junior and her loyalty to Tony throughout. Edie Falco found the depth of this character and revealed the inevitable ambivalence Carmella experienced.

The contrast between Tony's reaction to AJ's suicide attempt and his murdering Chrissy, whom Tony tells Melfi he "raised like a son".

All episodes involving Melfi's soul searching regarding the ethics of treating Tony. Like Gandolfini and Carmella, Lorraine Boccho (and particularly with Peter Bogdonovich as her audience)drew us into the duality of Tony's personality.

All the kitchen table conversations between Tony and Carmella that gave us the sense that the family represented Everyman - differing sides of all of us.

Silvio's unflinching loyalty to Tony and growth as captain/ consigliere. He was able to remain a sympathetic character in spite of frequently being the instrument of evil.

I am not sure that I can watch the last episode; I only hope David Chase has left open the possibility that this family can re-emerge in some form and at some point in time.

Thank you to David Chase, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Lorraine Brocco and all the others for elevating the quality of TV entertainment.
Amazing show...the entire cast and writing team was awesome!!! The Tony Soprano character reminded me of my father (except my dad didn't kill anyone LOL) He was the Godfather of our family and he passed away years ago at age 57. We will all miss the show and wish all the actors great successes in their careers. I personally hope HBO comes up with a show series that can fill the shoes of this great series.
Not necessarily my favorite memory - but I'll never forget the scene with Adriana desperating crawling in the woods trying to escape from being killed by Silvio.
The best episode is when Pauli and Christopher took the Russian in the woods to kill him and they were lost during the night. The part where Pauli was talking on the cell phone with Tony and tells
Christopher that the guy they're trying to kill is an interior decorator! I've never laugh so hard in all my life. Thanks for the memories. Good thing re-runs are on A&E.
The beauty of the Soprano family unit, Tony and his shrink, AJ and his shrink, Carm and Meadow is that no one ever mentions the big pink elephant in the room. This is one messed up bunch especially AJ. Yet all the family ever talks about is grandma, the yellow rain coat, Tony in High School. The subtle unwritten rule that has been in around since "The Godfather" (you don't discuss family) is so blantantly played. Perfect!
I'll miss the opening credits scenes where Tony is driving down the Turnpike. After living in Louisiana and Arkansas for 29 years, I miss NJ.
Though the entire show was top notch, the family dynamics were always absolutely riveting, especially Tony's mother, the late Nancy Marchand who must not be forgotten in all accolades. Sopranos - the best series I have ever seen.
    one more season?
The scene where Paulie said the Russian guy was an "Interior Decorator" was a classic.
The best episode for me was when Adriana was taken on a detour into the woods by Silvio. The moment of realization of what was actually happening dawned onto the audience just moments before it did Adriana; The whole chilling scene was captured perfectly!
The episode is where Paul and Christopher lost the Russina "Interior Decorator" was a classic.
I don't have HBO, and so have only seen The Sopranos since it has been broadcast on A&E. Anyway, the series is a fascinating glimpse into a parallel world which no doubt represents reality for a small group of people.

We know that the Mafia perpetrates violence, and that's nothing new. But the thing that somehow stikes me most about the mobsters is how much they waste time. They are seen sitting in a club playing cards or eating to pass the time. They sit outside their club and watch traffic. They waste a lot of time, and for them it's OK. So they are losers and their lifestyle is for losers.

Gangsters acting like that in the 1930s would be understandable, because of unemployment, lack of education among new immigrants, etc. But in the 2000s--wasting time is a sin. That's what I take away from The Sopranos, apart from its considerable entertainment value.

    Dan of Arlington Virginia
The episode is where Paul and Christopher lost the Russina "Interior Decorator" was a classic.
Best line? The pilot, the ten year old AJ expressed his disappointment at the menu for his birthday party: "What? No f___n' ziti?"
How will it end? I think that Tony will be tortured when his entire family is whacked right in front of him. He'll go home, fill the pool, sit on the edge in his bathrobe, and put a bullet through his head. The last scene will be the ducks returning to the pool.
I don't know if it was my favorite episode, but when Dr. Melfi was raped was a brutal episode. The pain, anger, brutality was a most-realistic view of such a violent act. I was terribly disappointed that the act was (like real life) never avenged or the perp was not brought to justice. In a show where a guy can get whacked for being disloyal, it seemed that this guy certainly should have gotten what he deserved. The conflict with Dr. Melfi, knowing she could tell Tony and things would be "made right" or to take the high road and let the issue work itself out (which it never did) was disappointing to me. In a show where shock and twists are around every turn, I would have hoped that this would eventually have closure. It was still an unforgettable episode.
Wouldn't we all like to confront a "doctor" like Tony S. did on the golf course and get the same results he did for his uncle.
Sundays will never be the same. I made a habit of cooking a big italian feast then having friends over to watch the episode. I guess I can cancel my HBO next week. I will put that money in a fund for the DVD collection. Thanks to all the guys.
Being the biggest fan ever, Every single episode is a memory. Greatest thing I ever watched in my life.
The best moment of the series is the episode with the charming, young and classy Italian lady Tony befriends, only to find out / realize at the end that she's been a figment of his imagination and was never there at all...
My all time favorite scene...When Janice shot Richie in the kitchen...Poetic Justice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i loved the scene where adriana was imagining herself driving through the country escaping her life as a moll. i was so happy that she had decided to get the hell out. unfortunately, her love for christopher over-ruled her common sense since she
was just daydreaming in the car while riding with silvio. and we all know what he did to her shortly after...
I lived the scene where Melfi (in a therapy session with Tony) is wrestling with the decision of wether or not to tell Tony what happened to her and effectively sic this killer on the perp. Tony asks if there's anything wrong, anything he can do to help. Close-up of Melfi's face..thinking, thinking...she says 'no'. Cut scene. Roll credits. Best ending ever.
WORST ENDING EVER!?!?!?! or is this just a sign that there is more to come? a movie?, or season 7? the ending was so bad that www.hbo.com was effectively shut down by people trying to log on, and, express their displeasure i assume.
I loved the Sopranos seasons 1-3, Seasons 4 on were a complete waste of time. I just finished watching the series finale, and I'm sory to say HBO has lost me as a customer. There were so many chances for the "family" to continue their intial sucess but that fizzled away in season 4 and continued till the end. Sorry Tony, you were better than that.
OK...the show just ended....WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ENDING??? I hated it!
Oh, I agree.... that episode w/ Chris & Pauly was hilarious! I am always cracking up from the expressions on Pauly's face. Especially tonight w/ the cat! Another episode that really touched me was the one when 'Pie O' My" was killed in the stable fire & subsequently, Tony went after Ralph.
So did it really end like that....the son's girlfriend running in while the bad guy is in the bathroom waiting come out and kill him????
Without a doubt the two best episodes of the Sapranos are the "interior decorator" episode where they chase the Russian throughout the woods, and Paulie loses his shoe in the snow, and they get lost! That was the most funny episode ever! Then later that day when they find the abandoned van, and are starving. Chris finds a condiment packet and Paulie and Chris fight over it.
The second best episode is "Denial, Anger, and Acceptance" when Silvio and Paulie go to the hasidic motel owner, and they are arguing with the owner. Silvio grabs the owner and puts his head on the counter while Paulie in his usual crazy self take the hotel ringing bell and smashes it on the owners head again and again! All you hear is "Ding! Ding! Ding!" This show will be dearly missed!
I cannot believe that David Chase could end a wonderful series the way that he did, I am so disappointed. I feel so cheated.
Sopranos - What a huge disappointment!!
What happened when Meadow went into the restaurant? Our screen went blue. That can't be the end???
Made me proud to be Italian, contrary to conventional opinion.

Hearing Chianese mention Profaci (he knew how to split his crew) recalled alot of memories.
David Chase is going to Hell, and I adore the man anyway! Maybe...just maybe the ending was through Tony's eyes? Maybe the guy in the Member's Only jacket came out of the bathroom and whacked Tony? Lights out - kaput. No idea.

What I love is the ambiguity. The world in Jersey will continue, even if we aren't watching. Somehow I find that better than a final conclusion. These guys aren't going away, ever. The Sopranos are the monsters under the bed I have become accustomed to.

Thank you, this was the most brilliant series in the history of ever.
The episode I really enjoyed was when everyone got in an uproar over the native american protests to columbus day, on the ride home pauli and christopher's discussion over events were very funny.
oh and of course the interior designer episode! so many to choose from. I will have to watch from the beginning on dvd. by the way the finale was bittersweet which is what I am thinking chase was hoping for.
THE SOPRANOS ENDING WAS THE WORST SERIES FINALE I HAVE EVER SEEN. THERE WAS NO ENDING ! ALL THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN AND THE SCREEN GOES BLACK.A 10 YEAR OLD COULD HAVE WRITTEN THAT ENDING. THEY REALLY SCREWED ALL THEIR FANS BIG TIME. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!! STEVE
I can't belive how stupid your ending was.
    We waited for that.......
I thought your writers and producers had more intelligence and thought processing.

If you names are on anything else, we will made sure the news makes it on the internet and advise everyone HOW STUPID YOU REALLY ARE.
I will miss "The Sopranos" as a staple part of my Sunday evening. I grew to love mostly all the characters. There are so many wonderful scenes I love to reflect on. My all time favorite has to be, Carmela's explosion in "Whitecaps" when she finds out about Tony and Svetelana! The way she projects her anger and hurt, acting at it's finest! Brings me to tears every time I see it! The "Soprano's" will always be missed in my Italian home.
Like everyone else, when the screen went black and the music cut out I was shocked - but upon reflection, it was perfect. The feeling of dread from the time the guy walked in ahead of AJ, through the 2 young guys walking in, to Meadow's parking problems - expecting something to happen to Tony, Meadow, or even the whole family. In the end, it just left things to your imagination, and made for great entertainment - but with the expectation that Tony and Co. will keep on going as they have, plugging new capo's into place and dealing with the Feds, and Tony looking for a new analyst! Thanks David Chase, and great acting all around!
What a finish! I was sooooo!! disappointed. The only intrigue was those last few scenes, especially Tony's daughter parking her car. Thought for a moment that she would be murdered.

Sorry but I give the last show a D-
It was not until I started watching The Sopranos that I suddenly wondered why there is not an Academy Award for casting. From Tony on down, every character in the show has always seemed spot on, and surely major talent is required to make that happen. Thank you, David Chase, et al--we are not likely to be so well entertained for so long again soon.
Woke up this morning and realized I was a fan of one of the greatest television dramas ever made.
All along the audience had to work in order to be a trus Sopranos fan.
The previous episode was one of the greatest ever, the ending an extention of Tony and then some.
I have a brain and David Chase makes me use it.
Come on people, they are just setting you up for a movie.
Not that it matters, but I agree with the thousands of other viewers. I understand the purpose, make up your own ending (getting shot in the head, viewers getting wacked, etc, etc), but after all this time invested, I feel robbed. I want closure, I WANT to see what happens to Tony. I want my money back from HBO for all the years of subscribing.
The ending was great! It left us feeling and thinking that there is more to come. When the screen on my T.V. went blank, I turned to my husband and ask "what did you do to the T.V."? I have enjoyed the soprano's from the beginning to the end.
Paulie and Chris sucking on frozen ketchup packets while sitting in the car at Pine Barrens. The madness and humor of that episode was priceless. Others: Vito dressed in leather at the gay club, the death of Adriana, Tony punching in the wall next to Carmela's head, Bobby and Tony beating the crap out of each other, sessions with Dr. Melfi, etc. etc. etc. Great writing, great acting. I will miss them. Compared to a lot of families, the Sopranos were actually somewhat normal. Scary, huh? Ciao, Denise
My favorite episode was "Second Opinion" when Carmela went to see the psychologist recommended to her by Dr. Melfi. The man laid it out for her in no uncertain terms how she was enabling Tony and was in fact a co-conspirator in his business.
