Sanjaya was good?
From CNN.com Special Projects producer -- and "American Idol" fan -- Steve Almasy:
I can't believe what I just heard on "American Idol." I may have to type this slowly. Sanjaya was a-l-m-o-s-t g-o-o-d. Last night's performance was certainly his best vocal since his tryout. (Watch Steve and Troy sharply disagree about Sanjaya) Now while I found his burgeoning mustache a little cheesy -- OK, really, really cheesy -- he may want to try to sing Latin songs (the theme of the night) more often. And dude should get extra credit for singing in Spanish, too. The judges were a little harsh on Phil Stacey; his song choice was one of the best of the night. It fit his voice. Phil is in danger of going home, but it may be Haley's turn to leave. She again showed the legs -- and that was about all I remember. It seemed she might have forgotten the words, because she halfway through "Turn the Beat Around," I swear she just started baying. Melinda Doolittle had the line of the night after her decent performance of "Sway." Simon called it cabaret, wooden and lazy. Mindy Doo said, "You know what, I'm happy because I think that he really wanted to say something bad and I'm glad he got the chance." I usually agree with Simon, but Melinda was far from wooden. The worst performance was Chris Richardson's rendition of "Smooth," which should be used as a technique to get terrorism suspects to confess. How the judges liked the awful, flat vocal, I'll never understand. Face it, he was out-sung by Sanjaya.
Sanjaya is making a mockery of American Idol and making good vocalists look bad. I wish people would stop the insanity and stop voting for him.
Haley may need to perform naked next week if she survives the vote this week. She was about as bottom end as Chris.
Thank you for your comment on Chris Richardson, in my house we thought we were the only one. I just don't like his voice.
I have to agree here on some note... he did sing quite well and did sound good. However, you can see that he finally hit puberty... BFD, get rid of him!
Funny, I have to agree. I think Sanjaya did well last night. I thought Melinda was great and Randy was the only one enthusiastic about her performance -- Simon was totally off about Melinda and LaKisha. I personally thought Phil, Chris and Haley were terrible.
Simon Cowell is so annoying -- before I liked that he was objective and really said the right things that any professional musician would agree with or at least, accept. Now he's just subjective and goes obviously too far with his comment. Jealousy and stuff only goes so far -- he should get a life or quit the show is he's done with it and feels that he can't do the job WELL anymore.
Losing respect for that guy!
I would not go as far as to say that Sanjaya was "Almost good," I would just say that he has done a better job of not stinking up the place as much. There is just such talent in the competition is on another level this year, with the exception of Sanjaya and Haley. I do believe that this was a harder week all around for remaining 8. Chris Richardson, who I happen to feel is one of the front runners, did not sing up to his standards last night but throughout the competition he has remained very consistent and full of talent. I was actually suprised at the level that Blake sang on lastnight, this I have to say was not one of his better weeks. It seems as though when you take away the fast paced songs and the beat boxing, his performances seem to be D.O.A. Phil has yet again done a decent performance, but it was not one of his finest. He seems to have a very strong voice, I think he just needs to learn to control it better. I would say that all in all, the group as a whole, did a pretty decent job. But it is really time to see Sanjaya get the boot. One can only take so many hair styles and coy smiles.
Yes, Sanjaya was good, I must reluctantly admit. The song let him talk-sing, which is better for him than really singing. Haley was downright awful. She's using her legs to distract from her singing. The top performer of the night was Blake. He'll be in the top 3 with Melinda.
It still amazes me that Sanjaya remains in the contest. I have yet to hear anything from him that would remotely keep him in consideration at this point. His voice is weak, his range is poor and his stage presence is totally lacking. Though last night's performance was better than he's shown in the past, to me, it still warrants his ousting from the show.
AI is a a serious topic of conversation between my mom and myself. After Sanjaya belted out :"Besame, Besa nm Gusto" I sat there STUNNED! I quickly dialed my mother (in Ohio) and exclaimen "MOM, IS THAT SANJAYA???"
Yes, the shock that he sounded half way decent was prevelent- It also assures us that once again, Sanjaya will be there to the next round...
I think that American Idol is losing it. If,Sanjaya wins. The show will be over. He can't sing and has no appeal. If,the show stays on,I will not watch it.
I think Blake was by far the best, followed by Chris Richardson. Everyone knows that Chris is compared to Justin Timberlake and he is trying to test out some different things. I thought his performance was good. As far as Melinda Doolittle goes, I agree with Simon. I thought it was a bit mechanical. I wish she would sing songs that interested people in my age group....I don't think I have ever heard any of the songs she ever sings. And I miss Gina. I think Haley, Phil Stacey, and Sanjia should have left along time ago.
there are only 2 contestants that can really sing and have a range for talent
Melinda and Lakeesha everyone else go home!
Okay, you nailed that one STRAIGHT on the head!!
Chris R was HORRIBLE. It was as bad as listening to Enya's "Only Time". Nails across the chalkboard bad. Kiki, a bit out of her comfort zone. I disagree with the judges, predicatable song but a challenge for her. Thought for once she showed a little happier more fun side. Mindy-Do, boring song choice, but best vocal of the night (big surprise) by vocal standards anyway. Blake- by FAR the only one I would have picked up the phone to vote for. Not that it was that good, but it was the best of the night. Entertaining and a fantastic song choice. By the way, since when has SANTANA been about the vocal?! Jordan, still think this dark horse is one to watch. She was fun to watch in an otherwise DULL DULL DULL evening. Sanjaya. Well I would be the first to wish him gone, but I gotta admit last night I give him credit. However, will his supporters back down after such a decent performance (I did NOT say good). He is SMART. He plays the camera, he sang quite well (for Sanjaya) and I will tell you want... the spanish was fairly coherent. More than I can say for Haley... Simon nailed it. She is wise to wear as little as possible- vocally she just isn't memorable. Phil, the most memorable moment for me is that last note. Oops. Not that the song was a bad choice, or that his vocals weren't otherwise good- but was Haley bad enough to keep the audience from remembering a bad croak? Bottom Three: Chris, Haley, Phil Pick to go: Haley- time to take those legs and start walking.
I thought Chris Richardson stunk the joint out last night. Not sure why they heaped praise on him. I have a gut feeling that fans are just waiting for a reason to give LaKisha the boot. She may have given them the ammunition they need. She has a very powerful voice but zero presence or charisma. Blake stood out from the crowd as did Jordin. Sanjaya's googly eyes should buy him another couple of weeks.
Sanjaya dares to be out-of-the-box. More power to him. It's refreshing to have something different. Today, it is easy to confuse artists on the Billboard charts because they are often so similar. The same phenomenon is true is music video. Everybody is looks the same, wears the same style, and hires the same hair stylist.
Sanjaya is a new flavor.
I disagree about Chris. I usually think his performances are very nasally, but this week I was pleasantly surprised. If anyone didn’t come up to par this week I would have to say it was Blake – and he’s my favorite!! About Sanjaya…don’t let the new haircut and mustache fool you! He is still that horrible, cheesy, ponytail Mohawk, and permed cabaret singer he was before. Wow, he can sing in Spanish…who cares.
EVERYONE stunk last night.
Melinda: Is looking more and more like 'Weezy from The Jefferson's Sanjaya: Shouldn't have been there in the first place Haley: Well, at least she's pretty. Lakisha: Get a new stylist. The Professor & MaryAnn: Whose names I still can't remember - this night was w-i-d-e open to turn in a memorable performance. Ya blew it. Cheers,
What does it matter if Sanyaya finally
sang something half way decently. He still is not in the same catagory as the others. He needs to finally go!!!
Since the opening guitar was so flat on Phil Stacey's song, I'm totally shocked he did as well as he did. Both the acoustic and electric guitars were as flat as any I've ever heard in his number and if he was listening to them, he didn't have a chance.
i'm already a fan of Sanjaya, i vote for him every week. but i do have to admit that his performance last night was the best that i've seen from him since his audition (of which, his audition to get on the show was very good, for everyone who has seemed to have forgotten that). nevertheless, he did a good job last night...good for him.
American Idol will continue to lose credibility each week that Sanjaya and Haley are still there. I do not agree that Sanjaya was "almost good." It's amazing to think that he and Jordin are the same age - they are absolutely on different ends of the performance/talent spectrum. I do agree that Simon's remarks for Melinda were totally off the mark. She is the only singer that can go out week after week and hit all of her notes.
P.S. Sanjaya's facial hair was C-R-E-E-P-Y. Time for him to GO!
Entertainment and monetary gain! That's basically what this is all about! As poorly as he has done on the show since auditions, Cowell and the rest of the AI execs KNOW they will make money off of Sanjaya! I personally don't think he's been too bad but, some of the others that have left (Gina, Chris S) should not have been voted off before him.
As for last night, I thought Sanjaya did very well and he should get props for singing in Spanish! Chris R. did good, but his voice started to get on my nerves after about 45 seconds (song choice wasn't great and he needs to incorporate more of HIS element in the songs). I liked Phil as well. Haily needs to go. The only reason she is still on is because they allow here to dress the way she does and, she's 'Eye Candy'! I picked Lakisha to win it all back in auditions, and Doolittle to be second. I still think a woman is going to win it all this year!
My husband and I were both very pleasantly surprise at Sanjaya's performance - definitely his best, and I am glad that he is getting some props for improvement. He is still the weakest singer of the competition, but he does seem like a nice kid, and I am sorry that so many people are saying such violently mean things about him. Blake, again, is the only one up there who I would buy a CD from. There is some of his older stuff on YouTube that I just love too. Anywan, since Sanjaya doesn't appear to be going anywhere (and I would be sad for him if he got voted off the very first time he did well!), Haley should be gone tonite. Or Phil (just not great) or Chris (how can anybody root for him? He is nasaly, and a JT clone. It will be a REALLY interesting competition when it is down to Blake, Melinda, Lakisha, and Jordan - if that isn't the top 4 I will be sorely disappointed.
I hate to admit it, but Sanjaya did a pretty decent job last night. I actually think he's getter better!! But the IDOL will be Melinda, she is by far the best singer in the competition. I think Melida, Lakisha, Jordin will be top three.
What draws me to Sanjaya (and I'm certainly not saying he's the best singer out there - if I saw him at my neighborhood karaoke bar I'd probably say he was pretty good, but not in the company he's in) is the fact that he's having -fun-. He has good charisma, he's not afraid to play up to what's going on, and he's just out there having fun.
Other than Carrie Underwood, I've never been thrilled with a single American Idol winner anyway. Those who finish towards the end tend to have better careers than those who win what is, to be honest, a popularity contest, not a singing contest.
Blake was the best. Sanjaya was good compared to his previous appearances. Jordan was excellent and we need to give credit to Jordan and Sanjaya for their age. I don't know what I was doing when I was 17years old...
As a Latina woman, I loved to hear Sanjaya sing "Besame mucho", he was super.
Go Sanjaya!!! He is the next American Idol!
Vote for Sanjaya!
Come on people! Sanjaya sucks and you all know it!
Sanjaya is the next American Idol. Deal with it. votesanjaya.com
Melinda prepared us for a less-than-stellar performance with her "I'm so not sexy" in the overview piece before she sang. After all, you are what you think! Maybe it was the camera angles, maybe it was her, after all...I enjoyed the technically-beautiful performance but it fell a little short. I use Melinda as my barometer for all others...Jordin is still appealing...and as far as the others...it's too late for Sanjaya to make a positive impression with me; maybe he should make a Latino record for teeny-boppers -- but an American Idol? No way. Same goes for Phil, Chris, Blake...Haley should definitely go home along with Sanjaya. Talk on the other boards is that last night was the worst-ever show, and I agree.
I'm also concerned that after thousands and thousands of wanna-bes, this group is what rose to the top...will we have to outsource to other countries for contestants for next season? Further, since AI reflects the USA demographic, what does this year's crop say about the music education and cultural awareness in our country? It's scary that out of all the songs they could have chosen, J-Lo, M. Anthony, Santana, and Gloria E. were chosen! Oh my.....
I get soooo tired of everyone saying Melinda and Lakisha should be the top 2. Melinda is amazing, I admit but she has yet to sing anything current and hip and that will cost her in the end. Lakisha has been average all season except for week 1 when she did the Dream Girls cover. That week she soared. The one that will win is Jordin. She has an amazing voice and can sell more records that the niche that Melinda or Lakisha will fall into based on their styles. Jordin's best performance was "I Who Have Nothing". What an amazing song and voice.
Oh and for the Sanjaya haters...try listening to some of his recorded songs on the American Idol website. I agree he should go but he does have a decent recording voice. The poor guy is getting grief and it isn't even his fault he is there...it is the voting public's fault. So lay off the poor guy.
Melinda Doolittle has by far the best voice, but Jordin Sparks is the next American Idol. She's got it all!. Sanjaya is a little twit and if he becomes the next American Idol through some fluke, I'll boycott and never watch American Idol again!!
Here's my brief take on the performances:
Mindy Doo - Mediocre performance. She was obviously out of her comfort zone. Not in any danger of leaving. LaKeesha - Her voice quality is outstanding. She showed more life then Mindy Doo BUT she was awkward and lacked any stage presence. I think both she and Mindy Doo exposed themselves a bit tonight. Should be safe BUT could be in the bottom 3 this week. Chris - Anybody that knows the actual song should have been cringing at his rendition. The judges would praise him regardless of his performance. Not as nasally as usual but not a good job last night. Safe for another week or two. Blake - Very nice job. Definatley the front runner for the guys. I thought this was far better then his lame version of Mack the Knife last week. Safe again... Jordin - Finally some stage presence tonight. Good job and stayed in a comfort zone. Another night like this for LaKeesha and Mindy and we might see a new front runner soon. Safe of course.. Haley - Nice Legs.... hate to see you go. Phil - Bland performance but an interesting song choice. He really blew it at the end with the voice cracking. If it ain't Haley going.... Sanjaya - At least it wasn't an offensive assault on our ears. The Spanish was a nice touch. PLEASE stop staring into the camera.... you're making me VERY uncomfortable. Safe again...
I can't believe when I read that people think Chris R. is good. Do you listen to him or do you just get fooled by his second-rate Justin Timberlake impression? That song last night was horrendous, off-key, and flat. In my house, we mourn each week he stays in the show. Hopefully, America voted him out this time. I'd much rather deal with Haley's legs for another week.
I thought Sanjaya did very well last night, and I'm not a fan of his at all. He sang better than Haley and Chris. I think Melinda is, by far, the best singer in the competition; however, she is not "pop star" enough to win. Her and Lakisha, both, act and look too old. On the other hand, so did Taylor Hicks last year, and he beat the best singer in the competition (Katherine McPhee.) I thought Phil did terrific and was surprised that they didn't like him. I thought he sounded sexy and really sang like he felt the song. I loved what Simon said to Haley about not being able to sing, but if she wears the least amount of clothes, she might be safe. What-Ever, It is a singing competition, or is it??????
I agree, Chris Richardson's performance was flat and awful. I couldn't believe the judges liked it.
'Simon was totally off about Melinda and LaKisha.'-is right. But Simon does not say anything negative about Sanjaya...it's as if he wants SandyMan to win
Y I agree I thought Smooth was anything but. How about Jordan Sparks? This girl is 17 and her performance gave me chills. She's getting better every week.
I use to love this show, but this year the talent is lacking, I really dont like anyone anymore.
Everybody should boycott Howard Stern because he is the one that started all the mess with Sanjaya. I know Sanjaya should have been gone before Stephanie, and Brandon. I hope that the public will finally wake up before its too late. If Sanjaya stays on American Idol there will be no one watching because the show would be a sham.
The general consensus of opinion is - SANJAYA MUST GO! He, at times is melodic, however,he is no american idol. If I were a contestant on the show this year with a lot more talent & presence than Sanjaya & was booted off, I would be very resentful of the fact that he is only sliding by on being the "worst" & getting votes for that reason alone. He should step down & allow those contestants who are serious contenders remain to fight it out fair & square. He has turned "American Idol" into a travesty. It's disgusting.
'Sanjaya dares to be out-of-the-box. More power to him. It's refreshing to have something different. Today, it is easy to confuse artists on the Billboard charts because they are often so similar. The same phenomenon is true is music video. Everybody is looks the same, wears the same style, and hires the same hair stylist.
Sanjaya is a new flavor.'-posted by Martine...listen, don't you undersdtand we have already had the styles of Prince and Michael Jackson and Milli Vanilli...so stop being in denial and saying it's refreshing to have something different...it's not different and if you cannot sing in a singing competition, you shouldn't be there-it's a SINGING COMPETITION, NOT A STYLIST MAKE OVER COMP.
I am thinking that maybe the judges want to say that Sanjaya is good, so he will be taken off the "vote for the worst" site. That way, Sanjaya can finally be booted off. I have to admit, I quit watching and voting after Sanjaya made the top 12, but last night, a group of friends and I all agreed to vote for the people we thought might be on the bottom three to try to even out the votes for Sanjaya. If everyone else would do the same, we may actually get rid of him. It is a shame that a website and Howard Stern can actually ruin a show like American Idol. I think that next year, American Idol will find a way to make the judges vote count, so this doesn't happen again.
Sanjaya is the new flavor all right. It's called "Tutti Fruity" It's time for that walking earache to go!!
As a semi-professional musician and the son of a vocal coach and brother to three extremely talented (also semi-professional) singing sisters, I often find myself wondering if I'm the one taking crazy pills or if Randy, Paula, and Simon are gulping them down. When I hear their effusive praise for a singer so completely lacking good tonal qualities as Chris Richardson, I don't quite know what to think.
Yes, Haley, Sanjaya, and even Phil are lackluster in their technical polish, but most people seem to be skip the fact that the three of them are tops in stage presence, and also that their voices don't sound like two cats fighting it out in a dark alley. And Blake's performance was utterly boring. Good singing? Sure. But last night he led the pack in a determined effort to be the sleepiest Idol hour yet this season. Without Ricky Minor and the band, the show would have been utterly forgettable.
Regarding Simon's comments to Melinda, one of the things he said was that she looked much older than she is and that was true. In fact, this happens often with her. She has a young face close-up but her entire demeanor and her looks are not youthful. This week was worse than usual.
I think the talent this year is very dull. You gotta laugh when the judges look at Sanjaya and question why he is still there and say that America has gotten it "wrong". Who put him there in the first place?? He should never have been allowed to move on. Just like his sister, they should have said "no way"! They let a talented singer go and put him on. I think the judges better make better contestant choices because many of these contestants make me think of high school plays not "Hollywood"!
As always, Jordin was the best. She is true perfection at 17 years old. I wish I had her confidence back then. We also have to give credit where credit is due. Sanjaya, for the 1st time, did credit to a song. It probably won't last but it's a first. Finally, Haley is using the only material she can to stay on the show and that is her body. I am ashamed of her. Simon was right on when he said what he said to her. She needs to model or be a stripper but a singer, NO!
I seriously think that the AI producers and judges slant their comments to influence the public into keeping/voting out the ones they want. How else do you explain that Chris R. gets praise each week when nearly every viewer you speak to thought he was awful? Why? Because the judges praise his flat, nasaly, twangy renditions as "hip" because they think he has the look to sell CDs. Just once, I'd love to see the look on Chris's smug face when Randy said, "Yo, dawg ... that s**** was horrible dude."
I think this is the worst final 10 since the show began. Jordin is my favorite to win it. LaKeisha and Melinda are fine also. Everyone else, and I mean EVERYONE, sucks!! It's truly amazing how Sanjaya, Chris & Haley have lasted this long. At least Haley is nice to look at, if you turn down the volume.
Blake is the only real singer this year....all the others would have been blown away earlier by the top 10 over the last years
Melinda Doolittle is so old fashion and unactractive that I can't stand it. I really think she should leave the show. This is "American Idol". She does not belong in this competition.
I still pick Melinda to be voted #1.Certanly, Blake is the showman of the group. Simon C is not the most likable judge, but judges have to tell it like it is no matter how harsh it appears to be.
Please get rid of Haley and Sanjaya. I don't particularly care in which order as long as they are both gone. It just gets more rediculous each week and is an injustice to the rest of the singers.
After reading the comments I am glad to see that I was not the only who was stunned when the judges said that Chris R's performance was good. It was not his best performance. I thought Phil Stacey did a great job and I am not a fan of his. I thought Blake had the best performance. I am hoping that Haley and her skimpy outfits will be sent packing!
TAALENT ?? What talent ?? Simon says it best, "Karaoke", cus that's all these people are, decent Karaoke singers with a little vocal training, dressed and made up by professionals, and piped through electronics to make them sound a little better. The show has run it's course, come on they voted in Taylor "Dean Martin" Hicks last year. Time to move on America, there are way better things you can do with that time each week.
sanjaya is good? yeah right...chris R. and all them guys deserve the trophy!
HEY,U know what i think Sanjaya will be in the top two finalists,if so,then this is the last season of Idol/
Ok, time to get real....Sanjaya cannot sing, he is an obnoxious "performer" who is too full of himself. Go home, you don't belong on Idol. Haley should put some boots on and start singing "These boots are made for walking" and start doing just that....off the show!!! These two are making a mockery out of the show. They should never have been sent to Hollywood in the first place.
Last night was a disaster and for that I blame JLo. She's suppose to be their mentor & she even said "Latin music is about passion." Yet she didn't teach that. Sanjaya is a very intelligent contestant - he stayed away from the uptempo and concentrated on the sultry. Hate to say it but the boy got props!
sanjaya needs to go home i think he is not good enough to be getting all the attention he is
Whether Sanjaya was good Tuesday night or not is irrelevant. He should have been voted off for his poor singing abilities weeks ago. Better singers have been voted off while the oddity has stayed. I have watched this show since season 1, however, this Sanjaya kid has made a mockery of a once enjoyable show. I will no longer watch this show - no one over the age of 14 watches the show anymore due to its decline.
Sanjaya threw me for a loop last night -- was impressed with his singing for a change.
For all of you that take AI so seriously, you really need to get over it. Every single person that has won AI sucks - they all sounds like Brittney, Mariah, and Jessica.
Phil, Haley and Chris = bottom three. Phil is gone tonight even though Sangirly ought to be. Blake did the best job imo. I believe it will be Blake and Jordin in the end.
Overall, I am just not impressed this year...and whoever wins, I won't buy their album.
Jennifer Lopez should not be giving vocal lessons or advice...
Absolutely NO, Sanjaya performance of a latin song was horrible. I had never heard a singer to sing so badly such a beautiful song like "besame mucho". I was disgusted and upset. And I have heard that song thousands of time sang by many different singers. That kid does not have passion.
I can not believe so many people still watch the show in the final rounds. It is just a populairty contest. I STOP watching the show after the tryouts are over. Too me, anyway, thats the only reason to watch. Just to see how BAD people and and to be amazed that they think they are so good......
.... I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK, I'M GOING TO BE A STAR ONE DAY AND THEN I WILL SHOW THEM!!!! ..... Get real.
I think the acoustics in the auditorium are apparently quite different than what the TV audience hears based on some of the judges comments. When I think someone was really good, the judges said they were pitchy, dull boring, old fashioned, etc, etc.
After reading today's comments, I'm wondering if it is my hearing, or my TV that must be out of whack? You are right though,I too, am getting tired of Haley's legs, but I really enjoy her energetic performances every week. Considering that the judges have given up on criticizing Sanjaya, it seems that Haley has the bullseye on her back now. Sanjaya is still there for the same reason "Chicken Little" and Anthony Federov stayed so long -- pitiful & cute. I LISTENED to Haley SING and think she's great. The legs are just props. Why are there no comments about Lakeesha always revealing so much bosom with her low-cut dresses? Guess that's just showmanship. Be fair y'all! I won't be surprised if Jordin wins. She stands out every week.
Sanjaya is just a kid! Everyone seems to forget that Sanjaya is just a kid who has been thrown into the mix with older more talented competitors. While it is true that Jordan, the other 17 yr. old finalist has a maturity and poise about her, Sanjaya has been described as creepy and weird, come on people, give the kid a break. While I am no fan of Sanjaya's vocals, he does provide the show with comedic antics while on stage. My sympathies are with his parents who must endure such unkind verbalizing about their son. Poor, poor parents.
Melinda Doolittle is a star, she's a breath of fresh air. She makes me glad to be from Tennessee. Melinda stands heads above the rest. Way to go!
Latin night was a dissapointment. Now, here is something that has been bothering me, why all the praise to Jordin? Yes, she is 17 and she can sing but as far as soul, I have yet to see that. I have tried to like her but there is something in her that reminds me of Katherine McPhee.
Chris was terrible. Phil can actually sing but another one that lacks soul. Lakisha's performance was good- terrible song choice though. Hayle, I feel bad for the girl and the comments she gets from the judges, but c'est la vie. Blake was actually pretty good- I enjoyed his performance. Melinda is in a different league- I doubt that she will win, but I don't think it will matter. I would buy a CD by her in a heart beat. Sanjaya... if nothing else he makes the show interesting every weeek.
I think he was good, he reminds me of Michael Jackson at that age.
A-m-e-r-i-c-a-n I-d-ol. Are people not grasping the concept that these words were meant to suggest?
Sanjaya. An American Idol? I think not. American Idiot, perhaps. I don't care if he can 'speak' Spanish and inflect it with a tinge of melody. He is still undeniably without talent. I just don't understand the attraction. When I saw circa 1972 Marsha Brady sobbing in the audience a few weeks ago, I wanted to slap the sense back into her. This isn't the Beatles! It's Sanjaya! He can't sing. He looks like a rabid animal. His grin is the same one I see on my toddler when he's just made a foul mess of his pants and he thinks the 'Eddie Murphy smile' might help to stave off my frustration. Frankly, the dirty pants are less offensive to me than Sanjaya's singing. Incidentally, all of the little "Marsha Bradys' need to wake up and smell the poo...I'm pretty sure Sanjaya is singing to a different tune. Lakisha and Melinda. Those girl have pipes, but they were sounding a little rusty last night. They were out of their motown/disco comfort zone. The problem I have with these two ladies is that I don't think that they will appeal to a broad enough audience. I don't care to buy a cd that will force me to spend an hour reliving the 70's. Phil Stacey. He's...unremarkable. I really think it comes down to his stage presence. For whatever reason, despite the fact that he can sing quite well, he just doesn't seem to draw the audience in. And, is it just me, or does he look sickly? Haley. Ughhh...get a pole, already. The outfits are getting smaller and smaller, as is her talent. Honestly...do people really hire her to sing at their weddings? I would want my money back. I'd sooner hire the Bob Seger cover band that plays at the local Moose Lodge. Please, Haley...put your clothes back on and stop embarassing yourself. Be content to just stroll through life being pretty. That's as good as it's gonna get for you. Chris R. Last night's performance didn't win any rave reviews from me. Having said that, I do think that he has talent. That boy next door smile doesn't hurt, either. He's unassuming and fresh. Will he win American Idol. I don't think so...but I think you will see him land a music deal. Jordan Sparks. She might just surprise us. She's got it together. She's just a kid, but she has the perfect mix of youth and maturity. She is bubbly and fun and most of all...she can sing! She is, by far, the most talented girl in the competition. She should be in the final two. Blake. I wouldn't say that last night's performance was his worst because I don't think Blake has ever given a poor performance. Like any other artist, I simply prefer some songs over others. From day one, I've thought that this will be the guy to beat. Blake manages to make the most of every performance, even those that are obviously out of his preferred zone. He's charismatic and engaging and has the most versatile talent of the bunch. I've never been a fan of beatboxing, but Blake causes me to make an exception. After five years of watching American Idol, I am finally going to buy a contestant's cd! Blake exemplifies the true meaning of American Idol.
Overall, lackluster night.
Melinda did much better than Simon gave her credit for (she's WAY beyond the others). Sanjaya is only getting praise because he wasn't awful. He's still not professional grade. Blake is always good, but not great. Chris R is still there because he's so cute. He's a so-so singer.
Haley and Phil in the bottom two Wednesday night, for sure. That scrawny slip of a mousefart Sanjaya is probably going to outlast even some of the true talent on the show... But if he wins out over Lakisha, Melinda, Jordin or Blake, I for one am through with this show forever. Shame on those viewers/voters skewing results for their own amusement -- the notion that people can't be bothered to play fair when we're talking about a potential life-altering career for some deserving young artist... Shameful. Like pretty much everything else indicated by the tastes of the modern American viewer. Shame on you nitwits.
I think Sanjaya blew the others away.
I can't believe I am about tho type this....
I thought Sanjaya was really good last night.
Before I start on the contestants, can I ask why J-Lo is the feature an no one sang one of her songs? I just heard Santa and Gloria Estefan songs. Why not feature one of them?
Was it me or was the theme supposed to be Latin last night? Except for Sanajaya, of all people, no one even came close to a latin beat. I heard more R&B and Soul than one lick of latin. Very dissapointing because the contestants could have won a lot of fans over if they did even a half way decent job. Ok now my break down on the performances. I was really surprised that Sanjaya was acutally good. His best performance so far. A little weak at the end, but first time he actually deserves to stick around another week. Ouch make it stop please. Chris was so bad, that it was painful. What were the judges listening to during his performance? My ears are still in recovery mode. He voice was squeaking and off key, just awful to hear and watch. I wish they could get rid of two people at one time so we could get rid or Haley too. Simon was dead on, she can't sing so she wears less and less. I hate to be this mean, are they going to put a pole out there next time? If she ever wore a full length dress or pants, she would be gone already. Melinda did an amazing job vocally, and for her that was animated. Simon got it wrong on her. I think she is the next Idol. What happent to Lady L last night? She was off here game last night. Blake was strong in the begining but faded at the end. Not a fan of Phil, but he was really good last night. Jordan was really flat and boring. Last night was huge disappointment. This season is not one of the shows best. I hoping when it get to the top four, Blake, Lacithia, Melinda, and Jordan, it will hopefully get better. If any of these talented artist lose I will be very disappointed.
Melinda and Lakisha are in there own fantastic level and non of the other people will EVER come close
I thought everyone was as stiff as cardboard last night. The upbeat Latin sounds should have had them dancing but no one could pull it off. Vocally Melinda is great, Lakisha is OK, Phil is bareable, Blake is not too bad, Jordin is OK too. All the rest need to go home.
You have to give the kid (sanjaya) credit. With all the controversy and pressure, the kid sure knows how to play it cool and notch it up each with with his charisma and flair. The kid is the best thing that could have happened to an otherwise really boring season filled with mediocre singers. And yes he was quite good last night. Well done Sanjaya.
I think Sanjaya is getting better. i can't believe that people would give him the chance to improve but if they give him more time, he might actually be decent. go sanjaya!
Sanjaya is the best thing to happen to TV in a long time. I'm going to get one of those window markers and write on my cars back window: "Vote 4 Sanjaya"
Sanjaya was the only contestant to sing in Spanish and he did a very good job. He's endured relentless bashing in the press and is handling it with courage and grace. Not many 17-year olds could. Way to go Sanjaya!
Sanjaya was better than Haley. Maybe she can be a leg model instead. Blake on the other hand...he's great. Very entertaining. I am getting sick of Melinda and Lekisa...they have the voice, but every performance is so predictable.
Sanjaya sang in Spanish, every word correctly, and he sang in his soft, tender voice totally befitting to the lyrics. I love it! I hope he'll garner calls from lots of Latina teens and women who appreciated his effort.
We all know Sanjaya isn't a great singer, and obviously considered a joke at this point. But as much as I hate to admit this, he is the reason why this season of American Idol is so interesting. I sure dont tune in to listen to Phil, Chris, or Haley sing! But then I guess it really isn't all about the singing talent & more about popularity...If Melinda or Blake don't win, i'm boycotting American Idol for good!
Sanjaya's continued presence clearly proves the existence of the rumored "vote for the worst" campaign, and very strongly supports the idea that each judge should have one veto once the contest has been pared down to 12 (but if a veto is used, all 3 judges would have to agree on who to boot instead).
sanjaya didn't sound half bad. still my favorite is lakisha...im nervous though that she will surprisingly be booted off just like mandisa was last year. i think mandisa shouldve won last year.
Blake is the guy !
Melinda and LaKisha are great singers but they seem a little "been there, done there" and dare I - just old!!! (not by age but by their whole vibe)- compared to the other contestants. And Jordan - just a little too perky, bordering on annoying...but then again maybe I'm just a big grouch...
I'm totally disappointed in American Idol - it is not about TALENT ANYMORE!
I don't know why the good ones get kicked off like Stephanie and Sabrina. Why is Haley, Phil and Sanjaya still on? They should have not been on at all in the first place. Haley is playing the sex game by the way she dresses - thinking that will keep her on - based on Simon's comments. Sanjaya is being used by people like Howard Stern and others to ruin the show. (Haven't you heard about the Sanjaya Fanjaya Love Train).
Sanjaya is getting REALLY creepy . . . his smile alone is enough to cause nightmares.
Sanjaya is a tool! He cannot sing and has no appeal to him.
I think he's an awful singer but if America is voting for him to prove a point, then why are we even boosting American Idol ratings by watching this "joke" tv show??? It goes to show you America thinks Idol is off the chain and they should have stopped seasons ago while they were ahead of the game.
vote for sanjaya!!!! maybe than we will finally be rid of this horrible show that parades as a singing contest. if it were truly a singing contest taylor hicks would never have been anywhere near the top 10, let alone win.
i just want to know why people are watching american idol to see "great singers." american idol is a joke and anyone who takes it seriously is a joke also.
I tried to vote and could not get through, this is the first time I connected with this @*$ show... Buena suerte Sanjaya!
people who are voting for Sanjaya are really ruining the contest. Howard Stern should be ashamed of himself, if that is possible. Perhaps people should start jamming his phone lines when he is on the air!
SANJY RULES!!!!
Everyone keeps saying that Melinda has the best voice but is not a pop star. Well, neither is Fantasia or Ruben or Taylor Hicks and yet they all won. Melinda is absolutely the best singer and should win American Idol. The final two should be Melinda, Jordin, and Blake.
Sanjaya should never have been in the contest. He is the worst singer up there and has been from the beginning.
Sanjaya is picked to win in our house. We are the ones that think he really stinks but vote for him multiple times every week. It is funny to see all the AI crazies get upset when he makes it through to another round. Go Sanjaya!!!
Every week my wife and I wait and watch to see if Sanjaya will be kicked off. And everytime he is not we get mad and think that the fact that he is still on is a sign that the show is truely going down hill after producing star power such as Kelly Clarkson and my personal favorite Carrie Underwood. I think Mancow is right when he said that all the people who now run all the customer service phone lines over in the middle east are calling in and voting for him because that is the only way he has been able to stay on there with his horrible lackluster performances.
I think Sanjaya was totally cool. Who are these Sanjaya-haters... get a life.I am sick of all the booming-voice singers we've had in the show. Sanjaya is refreshing and a great role model for all teens... do you remember what being 17 was like? Probably so doped you don't. Howard Stern be damned... Sanjaya rocks!
You know I totally agree with what you are saying about the show last night. Sanjaya was almost good. I think Haley is going to get the boot tonight.
Im sorry, but if Sanjaya gets in the top three or wins the finale, I will ban fox from my cable. He can't sing, his visual appeal isnt too bright, and what does he think hes a pimp? He was just speaking 2day about planning to get JLo's number, while Marc Anthony doesnt know. HE is a disgrace and I do not understand how he even reached teh top 24!
I don't watch AI except for the try outs so i can laugh at folks, after that i stop because its a really dumb show. Anyways I do remember when Sanjaya tried out and it was him and his sister, they were both not great, but his sister sounded way better than him. You gotta realize, America is voting, meaning kids between the ages of 10-15 and they just like his hair. Just like the NBA all start game, kids voted and look who got picked. That is why the voting age is 18 in America and should be left up to adults (even though with the current leader of our country you'd think a bunch of kids picked him) Big Juice OUT
Sanjaya is awful! I don't understand why he is still in the competition. People, this is unfair!!! Vote for the right people!!!!
It's about generating votes now, not singing ability; clearly, all of India must be supporting Sanjaya; Haley was a cheap mimic of McPhee but couldn't sing; Phil, Melinda and Lakisha are the only ones that can deliver; the others two males are so nasal it hurts to listen to them.
Phil is a great singer, but seems the judges don't see it, and thank God Haley's gone what a joke
It is a matter of time Sanjay will be gone, for me it is not soon enough. I feel like I am watching a little kid trying to sing his heart out. Sanjay has been the worst singer from the start. My favorites are Blake, Lakesha and Jordan. I will be happy if one of them wins American Idol. I think American Idol needs to make some changes in the future regarding the voting.
Someone needs to slap some sense and protocol into Simon. Perhaps he should return to his own country.
If I see Sanjaya one more time, I am going to jump off the "World Trade Center building". Please ship him to Bollywood.
I can't believe that Sanjaya Malakar is still on American Idol. He has a mediocre voice at best. He doesn't have any power to his vocals and I feel he does not deserve to make to the final four or the final itself. After all, this is not a popularity contest it is a contest of true talent of which he has none.
It wasn't fair for Haley Scarnato to be botted off and not Sanjaya. I feel that Haley had the better voice of the two. We'll see what happens next week. I have a suspicious feeling though that Phil Stacey will be the next to go.
What is going on with American Idol. The judges are judging their body parts and clothing. I thought this was a singing contest. Also, Sanjaya is kept on by all the teeny boppers and certainly not by his singing ability which is most unfair.I would like to say that Melinda Doolittle is great and what a personality. Chris is an all American guy which must not count for anything on this show. So come on people vote for the singing ability.
UnBELIEVABLE. How, how can America keep Sanjaya on the show. The Farah Fawcett locks alone are enough for him to go!
Haley hasn't been using her assets any more than Sanjaya. The only reason this tone-deaf contestant is still among the finalists is because he has so much sex appeal. (Surprise!) The prebubescent set can hardly keep their hands off their cells long enough for the rest of the contestants to finish. In the 60's he would have been vying for the cover of "Teen Beat" magazine along with Bobby Sherman. I think he'd do well as a male model, seriously. Maybe someone out there can offer him a contract soon so that the remaining musically talented contestants can have a fair shot at #1! This is supposed to be a vocal competition after all!
Troy sure sounded racist, the body language said it all. Not a frank opinion about Sanjaya. Hey, he was far better than Phil, Haley and perfectly screwed up Chris last night. Admit and learn to give some credit. Steve should stick to his opinion, not be looking or influenced with Troy's opinion. If anybody are creating a mockery, it is American public, the voters.
Chris is All American guy, what does that mean???? And, dare not bring India's name in here. Sanjaya in an American and no Indian. If it were a singing competitions in India, not Sanjaya not Chris nor Haley would make the firt few rounds. And, this show doesn't air in India nor middle east for voting. It happens here only in America - only FOOLS can make fools win, Just in America, watch at the country level, who is the top head of the nation.
