Police unsure if George Jones crash alcohol-related

NASHVILLE (CNN) -- Tennessee law enforcement officials say they have no reason to believe that the car crash last weekend that critically injured county music legend George Jones was alcohol-related, even though a pint of vodka was found in his vehicle.

Jones suffered a collapsed lung and severely lacerated liver after he crashed his sport utility vehicle into a bridge abutment near his home south of Nashville. The vodka was found in a sack underneath the front passenger seat, out of his reach, said Dana Keeton, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

"Other people had had access to the vehicle before the accident," Keeton said. "Doctors who treated Jones said they saw nothing to indicate (he) had been drinking."

Still, the Highway Patrol had ordered a blood-alcohol test on blood taken from Jones. Keeton said she did not know when results would be available.

Jones, 67, has a past history of alcohol and drug abuse. He remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, though doctors say he could go home by the end of the month.

"From the start, both doctors who treated him said that there was no sign that he had been drinking when the crash occurred," said hospital spokesman Wayne Wood. He said patient confidentiality rules prevented the release of any blood-alcohol tests.

Kubrick

Spielberg, Cruise, Kidman among mourners at Kubrick service

CHILDWICK GREEN, England (CNN) -- A select group of peers, family and friends paid their last respects to late director Stanley Kubrick at his English mansion Friday.

Among those braving a gentle drizzle to attend the very private funeral service were Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The couple star in "Eyes Wide Shut," Kubrick's last film.

The media were kept well away from the mansion, where the famed director lived a reclusive life. Security was tight, and red signs warned that trespassers would be prosecuted.

Kubrick, 70, whose films included "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Clockwork Orange" and "Full Metal Jacket," died at his home Sunday from natural causes.

Dylan, in his younger days

Bob Dylan, Paul Simon may team up for summer tour

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Bob Dylan and Paul Simon may be about to team up for a joint summer tour.

Though publicists for both singer-songwriters declined to comment, the Los Angeles Times reported that they would perform at a series in concerts in June and July. No dates have been set. The Times also reported that Dylan and Simon are expected to perform together during each show.

Reports of a concert tour were mentioned without confirmation on Dylan's Web site.

Dylan has been on the road almost constantly of late, buoyed by the 1997 Grammy-winning album "Time Out of Mind." He has recently teamed up with Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison.

Simon, whose stage musical "The Capeman" flopped on Broadway last year, has not toured in several years. He reportedly has been working on a new album that could be in stores before a summer tour.

British souvenir dealer bests Elvis estate in copyright fight

LONDON (CNN) --- A British entrepreneur has won the right to sell Elvis-related merchandise after besting the Presley estate in a court battle.

Britain's top court ruled that Elvis' name was not entitled to the legal protection sought by Memphis-based Elvis Presley Enterprises, clearing the way for Sid Shaw to sell his wares.

"I'm trying to keep Elvis' memory alive," Shaw said, sitting on the steps of the High Court with an Elvis impersonator. "Hopefully, fans will now help me to do this by buying our Elvis souvenirs."

Bratt: He'll always be "gracious" to his fans

Benjamin Bratt learned how not to treat fans from Karl Malden

(CNN) -- "Law & Order" star Benjamin Bratt says he learned how not to treat fans from another cop star of a previous era, Karl Malden.

Bratt, who grew up in San Francisco, tells USA Weekend that he approached Malden for an autograph while the veteran actor was filming "Streets of San Francisco."

"He smiled and said, 'Yeah, yeah, sure kid.' Then he slammed the door and just drove off," Bratt said. "I didn't cry, but it hurt my feelings."

"That certainly taught me a lesson. I try to be gracious and kind to anyone who asks for an autograph."

While earning acclaim for his role on "Law & Order," Bratt has also made headlines for his relationship with Julia Roberts. Asked to describe Roberts, Bratt replied, "She's just the best."

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
