Estefan welcomes 11 Cuban refugees to 'land of freedom'

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (CNN) -- It sounds like the dream of every Cuban who sets sail for American shores: Land on trendy South Beach, and enjoy a hot cup of Cuban coffee handed to you by a famous Latin musician.

The dream became reality for 11 Cuban refugees who recently arrived in the United States. Emilio Estefan, husband and musical partner to Gloria Estefan, was jogging Monday morning on South Beach when he saw the refugees come ashore in a crude, handmade boat. "I saw them come in and I saw them crying when they touched down," Estefan said. "They were so cold I brought them a little Cuban coffee just to welcome them to the land of freedom."

Estefan said they were startled to see him. "They just acted surprised because they know who Gloria and me are," he said. Shortly after, the men were taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Intocable

Fans mourn loss of Intocable band members

ZAPATA, Texas (CNN) -- Fans of the Tejano group Intocable gathered on Monday to mourn the loss of two band members and their road manager, who were killed in a car crash in Mexico on Sunday.

Some 175 fans gathered at Corpus Christi Watgergarden, reciting the Lord's Prayer and holding a moment of silence for Jose Angel "Pepe" Farias, Silvestre Rodriguez Jr., and Jose Angel Gonzalez, who died when their car blew a tire and skidded off the highway. The crash happened between the border city of Reynosa and Monterrey, the capital of the northern Nuevo Leon state.

"Their music was very comforting and their words were touching," Susan Salcido told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times at the Monday gathering. Intocable's albums include "Fuego Eterno," ("Eternal Fire") "Otro Mundo" ("Another World") and "Llevame Contigo" ("Take Me With You"). More memorial services are planned this week. The band's four other members were injured in the crash.

'Aimee und Jaguar' to open Berlin Film Fest

BERLIN (CNN) -- "Aimee und Jaguar," a movie based on the true story of a lesbian love affair in Nazi Germany, will open the 49th annual Berlin Film Festival on February 10, organizers said Tuesday. The German production, which tells the story of a housewife and her Jewish journalist lover, is one of 25 films from Europe, Asia and North America competing for the festival's prestigious Golden Bear prize.

The festival draws 11,000 film industry representatives, 3,000 journalists and a handful of Hollywood stars each year. Film star Shirley MacLaine will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at a screening of her 1980 feature "Being There," co-starring Peter Sellers. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is to address a glittering opening ceremony before the "Aimee und Jaguar" screening.
