Kane had served as a creative consultant for the "Batman" movies

'Batman' creator Bob Kane dead at 83

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Bob Kane, creator of the "Batman" comic series, died of natural causes on Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 83 years old.

Legions of fans have followed the capers unravelled by his characters Batman and Robin since the series was created in 1939. The creation evolved into a 1960s television show, and a recent series of Batman movies. Kane worked as a creative consultant on the movies, and has published an autobiography titled "Batman and Me."

Kane died at Cedars-Sinai hospital with his wife at his side, according to his attorney, Jim Leonard. He is survived by his wife, a daughter from a previous marriage, and a grandson. A private service will be held in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon; a public memorial is planned for a future date.

Coroner: 'Newhart''s Mary Frann died of heart attack

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- A coroner's report released Wednesday concluded that "Newhart" TV star Mary Frann died in her sleep from a heart attack. Frann passed away at her Beverly Hills home on September 23. She was 55. The autopsy found the actress had an existing but undiagnosed scarring of heart muscle tissue, the coroner's office said.

Frann was best known for playing the character of Joanna Louden on "Newhart" during its eight-year run on CBS. After the show ended in 1990, Frann switched types and portrayed the sultry Clementine Duke in the steamy 1990 miniseries "Jackie Collins' Lucky/Chances." She also starred in the ABC series "King's Crossing" and played Amanda Peters for four years on NBC's "Days of Our Lives."

Sandler

Sandler cancels appearance, apparently to back ABC strikers

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Adam Sandler canceled an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America," apparently to honor ABC technical workers in their picket line strike against the network.

Sandler was scheduled to appear on the show on Wednesday to promote his new movie, "The Waterboy." But upon arriving at the New York studios, he was approached by striking union workers who urged him not to cross the picket lines. Sandler obliged. The network confirmed his cancellation.

ABC locked out 2,000 workers after the National Association of Broadcast Employees & Technicians (NABET) staged a one-day strike protesting the switch to a new health care plan already used by parent company Disney.

Ono

Beatles wives Yoko and Linda liked each other, Ono says

LIVERPOOL (CNN) -- Beatles fans still upset over the breakup of the band will be shocked by the news: Yoko Ono and Linda McCartney actually liked each other. Contradicting the long held belief that they didn't get along, the wives of former Beatles frontmen John Lennon and Paul McCartney were friends, according to Ono.

"People always portrayed us as enemies, like two boxers on opposite sides of the ring, but of course it was never really like that," Ono was quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo. "In later life especially, we became friends. We had an understanding of each other. We had both married Beatles and we knew what that was like." Linda McCartney died of breast cancer in April. Lennon was shot to death by a mentally disturbed fan in 1980.

Douglas' latest movie, "A Perfect Murder," had its own media connections -- co-star Gwyneth Paltrow's dad is a TV producer

Michael Douglas has a thing for journalists?

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Michael Douglas apparently isn't afraid of the label two-timer -- even if the women he's dating are both very well informed. The actor has been seen out with two journalists in recent weeks. After being seen about town with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, Douglas appeared to be reviving a relationship with ABC's Elizabeth Vargas at the Monday premiere of "Meet Joe Black," the new Brad Pitt-Anthony Hopkins film.

Douglas told a New York Daily News columnist that his report of a Douglas-Dowd relationship "got me in so much trouble" with Vargas. But the News says Vargas "graciously sidestepped the issue entirely."
