(CNN) -- Rhythm and blues. Reggae. Some of the most celebrated sounds of the Americas trace their origins to West Africa.

Now audiences in the United States are grooving to the sound direct from the source, thanks to Africa Fête '99, a renowned world tour showcasing an impressive lineup from West Africa.

Baaba Maal of Senegal, Toumani Diabate of Mali and King Sunny Ade of Nigeria are among those spreading the songs of their homelands during the 18-city tour, which runs until September 6.

Whether jamming on the kora guitar or using talking drums in juju music, the musicians have earned the praise of old and new fans alike, including music legend Quincy Jones and former presidential candidate Jesse Jackson.

Join WorldBeat correspondent Tim Lister, who finds out how today's New World sounds have jazzed up the traditional tunes of West Africa.
