Brazil's Djavan: 'I like to experiment'

(CNN) -- Djavan, recognized by jazz musicians worldwide as one of Brazil's leading singer/songwriters, concedes that it is hard to classify his music. Like many Brazilian musicians, he fuses different elements and musical styles to create his own sound.
"When I was just getting started in this industry, I had a hard time because people thought my music was strange and complicated," he says. But over his last 12 albums, he has won the right to do things his own way.
He counts the folk music of his village in northeastern Brazil among his influences, along with funk, jazz and bossanova. With his latest release, "Bicha Solto," ("Free Creatures"), he has departed from his past, more melancholy albums, incorporating more dance rhythms into his work.
