Mary Chapin Carpenter sings for tribute recordWeb posted on: Thursday, October 08, 1998 4:29:51 PM LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Mary Chapin Carpenter is a fixture on the country music scene, so it seems only fitting that she would be chosen to take part in a tribute album honoring traditional country music. "Tribute to Tradition" also features artists like Patty Loveless, Marty Stewart, Collin Raye, and the Dixie Chicks. It was organized by Chet Atkins, the legendary country guitarist, who called Carpenter personally to ask her to be a part of the project. "He called and said, 'I'd like to contribute a track to this album called "Tribute to Tradition,"' and the song was 'Oh, Lonesome Me,' the first hit that Chet had with Don Gibson in I think it was 1959," Carpenter recalls. "And so he was going to rerecord it for this album and he asked me if I'd sing on it." Carpenter obliged. She's also publishing a children's book this fall called "Halley Came to Jackson," based on a song she wrote. Carpenter took time out on Wednesday to sing "Oh, Lonesome Me" for CNN's Showbiz Today.
