MONTEREY, California (CNN) -- Vienna has produced some extraordinary musicians through the years. Mozart, for example. And then there's Joe Zawinul, a modern-day headliner performing at the 41st Monterey Jazz Festival this weekend in California.
"World Tour," the new CD from the widely traveled keyboardist and his group, Zawinul Syndicate, follows globe-trotting performances in 108 cities.

One of those cities -- the Austrian capital of Vienna -- is where Zawinul, the musician, will become Zawinul, the businessman. The grandson of Austrian Gypsies (according to his biography) is opening a nightclub.
"This has been in the making for about five or six years," he told CNN's Lauren Sydney at Monterey. "It's going to called Zawinul's Birdland, and I will bring the best entertainment that is to be had in the world, as a matter of fact -- not just jazz music, many wonderful musicians and they're everywhere."
Zawinul's music comes both electrified and unplugged. For a sampling, listen to his Monterey warm-up heard Friday on CNN's "Showbiz Today."
