SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) -- Veteran U.S. entertainer Mickey Rooney has undergone emergency surgery and cancelled the remaining two concerts of an Australian tour, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

Rooney underwent surgery in a Sydney hospital for a minor colon perforation, the spokeswoman was quoted as saying by Australian Broadcasting Corp radio.

The 79-year-old actor was to have performed in Sydney later on Friday and then in Queensland state on Saturday. He was expected to be in hospital for only a short time, the spokeswoman said.

The former child prodigy was one of Hollywood's hottest stars at the age of 19, was an out of work actor at 40 and then saw his career resuscitated in his late 50s.

He received an honorary Academy award in 1983.
