What's on screen this summer -- besides 'Star Wars'
Web posted on: (CNN) -- "The Phantom Menace" may have more special effects than just the ones people see on screen: The notion that one good movie-going experience leads to another is making some analysts suspect that this summer could be one for the record books, thanks to the "Star Wars" kickoff. Other analysts aren't so optimistic. The 15 new releases not only have to compete against each other, but 130 also-rans as well. "From the Fourth of July until the end, there is just one film cannibalizing the next, and it's going to be quite a bloodbath," says Kirk Honeycutt, film critic for The Hollywood Reporter. "Frankly, 'Star Wars' will be sitting here quite happily, and the other films will be fighting over this arena." Studios are hedging their bets, by having a little something for everyone: romantic comedies, raunchy comedies, dramas, Westerns, cartoons and thrillers. The bottom line is that there are enough films out there out there to match everyone's sensibilities and 'nonsensibilities.'
