Kevin Spacey and Academy President Robert Rehme announce the nominations

'Life Is Beautiful,' 'Shakespeare in Love' among Oscar nominees

BEVERLY HILLS, California (CNN) -- Independent films fared extraordinarily well in the Oscar nominations Tuesday, with "Shakespeare in Love" taking the most nominations -- 13 -- while "Elizabeth" and the Italian film "Life is Beautiful" captured seven apiece.

"Saving Private Ryan," which had been widely anticipated to receive the most nominations, got 11 nods. One notable omission: Jim Carrey was not nominated for his role in "The Truman Show." He had won a Golden Globe in the comedy category for the part just two weeks ago.

Here are the major-category nominations announced for the 71st Annual Academy Awards:

Best Picture:

Best Director:

The awards will be given out on March 21 in a ceremony hosted by Whoopi Goldberg at the Los Angeles Music Center. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC.
