Demi Moore, Bruce Willis splitting after 11 years

June 25, 1998
Web posted at: 2:02 a.m. EDT (0602 GMT)

LOS ANGELES (CNN) - Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, one of Hollywood's highest profile couples, said Wednesday they were splitting up after 11 years of marriage.

Spokesmen for the couple declined to give a reason for the split or say whether the film stars would be seeking a divorce. They also declined to discuss who would get custody of the couple's three daughters, Rumer Glenn, 9, Scout Laurie, 7, and Tallulah Belle, 4.

Paul Bloch, a spokesman for Willis, issued a statement saying: "Bruce Willis and Demi Moore have announced they are ending their marriage after 11 years. They were married on Nov. 21, 1987."

Moore publicist Pat Kingsley refused to elaborate on whether the split was a separation or a divorce.

There was no divorce filing in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday.

Married after knowing each other for three months, the couple were known for their extravagant lifestyle. Their wedding caused a stir and was reported to have cost $875,000. Little Richard sang at the ceremony.

Moore one of Hollywood's biggest female stars

Moore, 36, was born in Roswell, New Mexico, and her real name was Demetria Guynes. Now one of Hollywood's biggest female stars, Moore got her start in the 1984 "Brat Pack" hit "St. Elmo's Fire" in which she played a cocaine addict. Shortly afterwards she kicked a cocaine habit of her own.

She went on to star in such vehicles as "Ghost" in 1990 and "A Few Good Men" in 1992. She caused controversy with her production of the Nathaniel Hawthorne classic 'Scarlet Letter," which she gave a happy ending, saying "not many people have read the book." She also achieved national attention by posing nude and very pregnant on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.

The German-born, New Jersey-raised Willis, 43, is one of Hollywood's biggest action heroes famed for the "Die Hard" series in which he plays ex-cop John McClane. He received critical acclaim for roles in "Pulp Fiction" and "Nobody's Fool," both in 1994.

He got his start in the hit TV series "Moonlighting." He is the star of the summer movie "Armageddon,' which opens next week in which he stops an asteroid on a collision course with earth.

The couple are embroiled in a federal lawsuit in Idaho against their former nanny, Kim Tannahill, who lived with the family from 1994 until she was fired last summer. In January the actors sued her, claiming breach of a confidentiality agreement after she talked about their private lives.

Willis and Moore split their time between a 40-acre ranch in Hailey, Idaho, an exclusive duplex on Central Park West in Manhattan and a beach home in Malibu, California. Willis also owns commercial properties in Idaho and New Jersey.

Actress Ally Sheedy said in a recent interview published in US magazine that she had grown increasingly estranged from Moore since her 1987 marriage to Willis, at which Sheedy was a bridesmaid.

She suggested that Moore's union with Willis was part of what Sheedy saw as Moore's drive to attain greater power in the entertainment business.

"The quickest route to power for an actress in Hollywood is to hook yourself up with someone who can put you in a good position and make yourself into a sex object."

With the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Whoopi Goldberg, the couple were among the original group of celebrities involved as part-owners and promoters of the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.
