SAN ANTONIO, Texas (CNN) -- The call is out for girls who want to play Selena, the Grammy-winning, Tejano singing star murdered by her fan club president last March.

Producers of a new film about Selena's life want to fill two roles -- one of Selena as a child and the other of her as a young woman. In San Antonio, where the first tryouts were held this weekend, some camped out overnight.

The casting call for Selena look-alikes also is being held in New York, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Susannah Gloria

Susannah Gloria, a Dallas high school senior, has been practicing her singing and dance moves, just in case she is asked to perform. For her, the possible movie role is a dream come true.

"Selena's always been my role model," the 18-year-old says. "I've always idolized her. I've always wanted to be like her."

Amanda Sanchez

Amanda Sanchez, a 9-year-old from Fort Worth, traveled to San Antonio with her mother the night before the tryouts to get in line before dawn. If the youngster gets chosen to play Selena, her mother says the experience will be "rewarding" for them both.

Amanda says she's trying out because her family is always asking her to sing.

The Selena look-alike casting calls will be held in the other cities over the next several weekends. The director of the film wants to start shooting in May.

Yolanda Saldivar was sentenced to life in prison for the March 31, 1995, shooting death of Selena Quintanilla Perez, 23, in a Corpus Christi motel.
