(CNN) -- Potential Oscar champs look different these days. "Babe" comes to home video this week, just in time to take maximum advantage of a surprising number of Academy Award nominations. The film is an enormous, unexpected pleasure on a variety of levels, and even if you don't expect to like it -- even if you're pretty sure you won't -- give it a chance.

"Operation Dumbo Drop" is something new in the history of the Vietnam War at the movies ... a kid's action film. Two hapless army officers and the requisite motley group of enlisted men are required to bring an elephant to a strategic village. The story is very loosely based on a true incident, which apparently didn't actually involve any parachuting elephants. Nevertheless, after passing through films like "The Deer Hunter," "Platoon," and "Apocalypse Now," the Vietnam War is finally ready for the kids' shelf. The '60s really are over.
See you at the rental counter.
