Analysis: Why say goodbye to a TV show?

NEW YORK (CNN) -- On Thursday night, fans of "Seinfeld" will bid farewell to their favorite sitcom as it permanently sets sail for the land of re-runs. It's an event that's been played out many times before; in fact, saying goodbye to our favorite television programs has become a tradition that harkens back to the infancy of TV.

But why? Why do we feel the need to say our farewells to TV shows based on characters that don't exist -- characters, spouting ideas about, well, nothing? And why do we miss them when they're gone?

Correspondent Garrick Utley investigated and filed the following report.
