(CNN) -- "Sphere" is a new science fiction/thriller with a very impressive pedigree. Based on a novel by mega-writer Michael Crichton, directed by Academy Award winner Barry Levinson, and starring Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson, "Sphere" is dripping with talent.
But that doesn't automatically make it a great film. Instead, the actors all seem to wander aimlessly through this soggy underwater saga. And the thrills in this "thriller" are few and far-between.
The name value of the stars involved will draw in curious audiences the first weekend, but word-of-mouth will soon make it "sphere" today, gone tomorrow.
