NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, The Mamas and
the Papas, Lloyd Price, Santana and Gene Vincent were among
the music legends inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame in a ceremony on Monday.
The 13th Annual Induction Ceremony was held at the
Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
"The artists represent a broad spectrum of music, and include
early legendary greats as well as artists who are still
actively pursuing their careers," said Suzan Evans, executive
director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. The
1998 inductees also include Jelly Roll Morton in the Early
Influence category and Allen Toussaint in the Non Performer
category.

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the
release of their first record. Criteria considered for
joining the musical celebrities include the significance of
the artist's contribution to rock 'n' roll music. Similar
criteria are used for induction of non-performers, who
include songwriters, producers, disc jockeys and record
company executives.
The Foundation's nominating committee, which is composed of
rock 'n' roll historians, selects five to seven nominees each
year in the artist or performing category. Ballots are then
sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock
experts. Those performers who receive the highest number and
more than 50 percent of votes are inducted.
