Alec Baldwin offers to aid Democratic campaigns

Actor Alec Baldwin may soon be going public with his politics. The Associated Press reports the actor has offered to campaign for Democratic candidates to help defeat Republican officeholders in New York, including Gov. George Pataki and Sen. Alfonse D'Amato. Baldwin is a Long Island resident.

Geena Davis has decided to expand her career. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actress is reportedly in talks with Disney Pictures about playing the evil Queen Beryl in a film version of the popular Japanese cartoon, "Sailor Moon."


Director Paul Verhoeven is coming back to Earth with "Houdini." Daily Variety reports the filmmaker, who is now putting finishing touches on "Starship Troopers," has signed up to direct a biography of the legendary illusionist. The project has been moving around Hollywood for several years. No casting has been announced yet.


Kevin Sorbo won't be able to star in "Black Dog." The "Hercules" star was set to work on the Universal thriller this fall. However, Daily Variety reports a recent shoulder injury has complicated the schedule beyond repair and he's choosing to rest up before returning to New Zealand and his show. Universal Studios is reportedly supportive of his decision.


Jennifer Jason Leigh won't be working on Broadway as planned. Daily Variety reports the actress has pulled out of plans to stage "Wait Until Dark" on Broadway co-starring Quentin Tarantino. Director David Cronenberg has moved up planned shooting of his next film, "Existence" with Leigh in the cast.

A reunion tour by the rock group Jane's Addiction is a clear winner in Los Angeles. The Hollywood Reporter trade paper indicates the 6,000 tickets made available for a concert at the Universal Amphitheater sold out in four minutes flat. Another date was added and that one sold out an hour later.


"The Devil's Own" is the number-one video rental according to the weekly Billboard home video stats. "Donnie Brasco" holds on to the second-place spot followed by "Sling Blade," "Dante's Peak" and "Murder at 1600."


"Air Force One" is flying high in international box office. The film is currently number one in Spain, Italy and Hong Kong. "Men in Black" is the top ticket seller in Australia and Germany. Brazilian audiences are turning out for "My Best Friend's Wedding" and in the United Kingdom, "The Full Monty" is tops.
