From Correspondent Dennis Michael

Robert Downey Jr. will play a bad guy in an upcoming Dreamworks project. The Hollywood Reporter trade paper indicates the actor is signed to co-star with Annette Bening and Aidan Quinn in the thriller "In Dreams." Shooting begins in Massachusetts at the end of the month.

A veteran of the "golden days" of MGM will recount some of her stories this week on the Turner Classic Movies channel. Ann Miller is the guest of honor this week on "Private Screenings" with Hollywood columnist Robert Osbourne as the host.

MacLaine

Shirley MacLaine will be in the director's chair for her latest movie effort. Daily Variety reports the Academy Award-winning actress will direct "Bruno," a relatively low-budget comedy for Original Voices Productions. Shooting will begin in New York this October.

Damon Wayans and 20th Century Fox have called it quits on a new television show for the comedian. Daily Variety reports Wayans and the studio were unable to come together on plans for a situation comedy for the comedian. The trade paper cites sources as claiming Wayans is in talks with another production company.

Wayans

Juliette Binoche has decided to leave the film "Lulu on the Bridge" but Daily Variety reports Mira Sorvino is likely to take her place. Sorvino is in talks to take over the title role in the film opposite Harvey Keitel. Vanessa Redgrave and Stockard Channing are also in the cast. Shooting begins in October.

The title of the new Bruce Willis-Alec Baldwin thriller has been changed from "Simon" to "Mercury Rising." The movie is currently shooting in Chicago for Universal Pictures.

The list of presenters for the Emmy awards is growing. Jerry Seinfeld has agreed to present one of the awards on September 14. It's the 49th annual Emmy gala.

Denver

It's been a long time coming but John Denver is back on the Billboard charts. The singer's new album "Best of John Denver Live" is number 47 on the Billboard Magazine Top Country Album Charts this week. His last chart appearance was for his "Higher Ground" album in 1988, when he peaked at 49.

The premiere of the new 20th Century Fox movie "The Edge" was held in the Hamptons before a star-studded audience. Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger and Sir Anthony Hopkins were among the celebrities in attendance at the gala Saturday night. The film goes nationwide in late September.
