NEW YORK (CNN) -- Martin Lawrence, co-star of the new comedy "Nothing to Lose," has had his share of run-ins lately.
The trouble started in May 1996 when police detained him after he was found wandering through a busy Los Angeles intersection with a loaded handgun in his pocket.
Add to that two arrests on other charges, a restraining order from his estranged wife and sexual harassment and battery charges from his TV wife, Tisha Campbell, his co-star on the series "Martin."
Fast-forward to July 1997. "Nothing to Lose" is about to hit theaters nationwide. "Things are great," Lawrence says. "Things are moving along. Everything is positive, and I am very happy and thankful to my fans that supported me through the hard times."
The same goes for his work associates. "On the set he was fine," actor Tim Robbins says. "I have read stuff about other actors and reputations that have proved to be untrue. So I give people a lot more credit and try not to judge."
"I love working with him," director Steve Oderkerk says. "I would work with him again in a second."
As for Lawrence, he's looking forward to "Nothing to Lose." The actor says he's has fond memories of his five-year stint on television. But he says he is enjoying a more diverse array of work.
"I am moving onto other things, movies. I am the voice of tiger in 'Dr. Doolittle,' Lawrence says. He also has a new comedy album, 'Doing time in Hollywood.'
And if all goes well, doing time in Hollywood is only the name of his new album.
