BEVERLY HILLS, California (CNN) -- Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow have broken off their engagement and are splitting up.
No reason for the breakup was given in the brief statement released Monday night by Pitt's publicist, Cindy Guagenti. "Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow have mutually agreed to end their two-and-a-half-year relationship," the statement said.
"They have been broken up for a couple of weeks now," Guagenti told the New York Post. "It's not because of any specific event."
A source told the Post that the party-loving Pitt seemed to feel hemmed in by Paltrow's preference for quieter fun.
No wedding date had been announced but published reports said the couple had planned to tie the knot as early as this month. They announced their engagement last November.
There was no word about whether the split would affect plans for the couple to team up for the comedy "Duets." The movie was to be directed by Paltrow's father, Bruce Paltrow, and was scheduled to begin filming the fall.
Pitt, 32, and Paltrow, 24, met in 1995 on the set of the drama "Seven." In March, Pitt told Rolling Stone magazine that it was love at first sight. He said he got "goofy" the minute he got "within 10 feet of her."
Pitt's credits include "The Devil's Own," "Twelve Monkeys," "Interview with the Vampire," and "A River Runs Through It." Paltrow's films include "Emma" and "Moonlight and Valentino."
