LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Hollywood's newest female buddy team is a cross between Thelma and Louise -- and Lucy and Ethel.
The title characters of the new comedy "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" are going back 10 years after graduation, with a take-no-prisoners plan to impress all of those snotty popular kids who made their life less than pleasant way back when.
The two actresses starring as Romy and Michelle -- Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino -- say they can relate.

"I was 35 in high school," says Kudrow. "I thought I was very sophisticated and had outgrown everybody with their football player-cheerleader mentality."
"I was not in the popular clique. I was somewhat at odds with them, which made my life a little bit difficult," says Sorvino. "I couldn't wait to get out of high school. I hated high school."
But the comparisons of the characters and the actresses end there. The heroines of the movie, Romy and Michelle, aren't the brightest stars in the constellation. In real life, Kudrow graduated from Vassar; Sorvino, from Harvard.
If acting hadn't worked out, "I know that I would have been definitely involved in some kind of research in evolutionary theory or something in there," says Kudrow.
"I might have possibly gone into anthropology, because I just sort of love that," says Sorvino.
Kudrow and Sorvino say they also loved working with each other. So if "Romy and Michelle" is a hit, a sequel might not be far behind.
"Romy and Michelle Go To Washington," perhaps.
