Director finds Madonna a brilliant 'pain'

The critics may love Madonna as "Evita," but director Alan Parker gives the singer mixed reviews. Parker tells Newsweek that Madonna was a pain in the rear end to work with on the set. But Parker adds that "she came to work every day brilliantly prepared to work or sing."


"Independence Day" has just added another achievement to an already long list. The film is the third film in history to gross over $400 million in international markets. Daily Variety reports a huge reception in Japan put the film over the top. Only "Jurassic Park" and "The Lion King" have done better in international markets.

Reba Reba McEntire's concert schedule has been temporarily canceled. The singer and occasional actress has canceled concerts in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Southern California due to a knee injury suffered while skiing last week. Reschedule information is still pending.

Uma Thurman and Geoffrey Rush of "Shine" fame have joined the cast of the film version of "Les Miserables." The actors will join the film's star, Liam Neeson, for shooting set to begin in April in Prague and Paris.

The Disney Channel has reached yet another milestone: the $25 million subscriber mark. The channel has enjoyed a growth spurt as the subscriber base has doubled in two years.

Joni Mitchell More honors for Joni Mitchell ... The veteran composer will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award this week from the National Academy of Songwriters. Mitchell has two albums out, one called "Hits" and a companion disc called "Misses."

Big name change in Hollywood ... The name MCA is out and Universal Studios Incorporated is in. Universal has abandoned the old Music Corporation of America title in favor of the studio's original name, which dates back to the silent era.

Hollywood birthday greetings to Kirk Douglas. The actor, who says he considers himself the embodiment of the American Dream, turns 80 this week. Douglas
