The critics may love Madonna as "Evita," but director Alan
Parker gives the singer mixed reviews. Parker tells Newsweek
that Madonna was a pain in the rear end to work with on the
set. But Parker adds that "she came to work every day
brilliantly prepared to work or sing."
"Independence Day" has just added another achievement to an
already long list. The film is the third film in history to
gross over $400 million in international markets. Daily
Variety reports a huge reception in Japan put the film over
the top. Only "Jurassic Park" and "The Lion King" have done
better in international markets.
Reba McEntire's concert schedule has been temporarily
canceled. The singer and occasional actress has canceled
concerts in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Southern California due to
a knee injury suffered while skiing last week. Reschedule
information is still pending.
Uma Thurman and Geoffrey Rush of "Shine" fame have joined the
cast of the film version of "Les Miserables." The actors
will join the film's star, Liam Neeson, for shooting set to
begin in April in Prague and Paris.
The Disney Channel has reached yet another milestone: the $25
million subscriber mark. The channel has enjoyed a growth
spurt as the subscriber base has doubled in two years.
More honors for Joni Mitchell ... The veteran composer will
receive a Lifetime Achievement Award this week from the
National Academy of Songwriters. Mitchell has two albums
out, one called "Hits" and a companion disc called "Misses."
Big name change in Hollywood ... The name MCA is out and
Universal Studios Incorporated is in. Universal has
abandoned the old Music Corporation of America title in favor
of the studio's original name, which dates back to the silent
Hollywood birthday greetings to Kirk Douglas. The actor, who
says he considers himself the embodiment of the American
Dream, turns 80 this week.
