LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- After an eight-day stay, singer Frank Sinatra was released Saturday morning from a Los Angeles hospital, according to publicist Susan Reynolds.

"He is very happy to be home and again thanks everyone throughout the world for the wonderful get-well wishes he has been receiving," said Reynolds, who declined comment on Sinatra's ailment.

Sinatra, 80, was admitted to Cedars Sinai Medical November 1, reportedly for treatment of a pinched nerve. But when his stay lasted longer than expected, sources close to Sinatra said he was also being tested for respiratory problems.

Hollywood columnist Army Archerd, who writes for Daily Variety, said she was told by Sinatra's daughter, Nancy, that her father had a slight case of pneumonia. Archerd said Sinatra's other daughter, Tina, reported that her father had been suffering the effects of the pinched nerve for weeks before checking into the hospital.

One Los Angeles television station quoted an unnamed hospital source as saying Sinatra was being treated for a "heart ailment."

Another station said a hospital nurse told them that pneumonia medication had prompted an irregular heartbeat. But by Friday night, a friend of the family had told yet another station that reports of Sinatra's ill health were greatly exaggerated.

Meanwhile, Sinatra's wife, Barbara, canceled plans to attend a Monday board meeting of the Sinatra Invitational celebrity golf tournament and charity fund-raiser, which she and her husband sponsor.

In Hoboken, New Jersey, the entertainer's hometown, city officials on Sunday will unveil a sidewalk plaque in front of the remains of the house where he was born. Most of the home was destroyed by fire.

Sinatra, who turns 81 December 12, is one of the entertainment world's more enduring entertainers. He won an Academy Award in 1955 for best supporting actor in his role in "From Here to Eternity."
