The oldest form of home-grown American music has gone hi-
tech.
Jazz has officially entered the computer age with a new
multimedia look at its history and an award-winning site on
the Internet.
"Hello, I'm Herbie Hancock, your humble host for this guided
tour of 'Living Jazz,'" the beginning of this new CD-ROM
states.
But "guided tour" is an understatement.
"Living Jazz" is a
virtual history lesson of the unique sounds and styles of a
uniquely American musical form.
The CD-ROM brings the user inside the world of jazz through
rare interviews, historical commentary and vintage
performance videos from the hot hi-de-ho's of one jazz
legend, Cab Calloway, to the frosty trumpet of the avatar of
the Cool Jazz movement, Miles Davis.
For the latest sounds from Hancock, close down your CD-ROM
and get your web browser on track for Jazz Central
Station.
This home page for jazz aficionados won the honor of best web
site earlier this year at the inaugural "Online Music
Awards."
With an imaginative train-themed graphic interface and its
own theme song, Jazz Central Station bops and swings with
interactive and informative features.
Points of interest on this site include music news, live chat
sessions, real-audio interviews and previews.
The jazz destinations link sends web surfers out on a virtual
tour of live shows around the world, including the Monterey
Jazz Festival.
Fans can view the seating charts and check out the
biographies of all the artists playing at the festival.
