The American Movie Channel will premiere the documentary
"Bally-hoo -- The Hollywood Sideshow" August 13. To rev up
interest in the documentary, '50s icon Frankie Avalon and
Mamie Van Doren showed up at the Television Critics
Association meeting in Los Angeles this week.

Kurt Russell is the $15 million man. The Hollywood Reporter
trade paper notes Russell will receive $15 million for
starring in "Soldier" for Warner Brothers. Russell is a hot
commodity these days, thanks to strong returns in "Stargate"
and "Executive Decision." His next film, "Escape from L.A.,"
will be released shortly.

Some changes have been made at "The John Larroquette Show."
Actress Allison La Placa is leaving the ensemble. La Placa
will appear in one of next season's episodes to tie up some
loose strings, according to the Hollywood Reporter trade
paper.

Femme fatale Famke Janssen of "Goldeneye" fame will soon be
headed out to sea. The Boston Globe reports the actress will
co-star with Treat Williams and Wes Studi in "Deep Rising,"
about a creature who haunts a cruise ship.
Actor Sam Waterston is making a return trip to Cambodia.
Waterston reportedly traveled to Southeast Asia for a visit
intended to publicize the international fight against land
mines. Waterston starred in the Oscar winner "The Killing
Fields" in 1984.

Tim Robbins has received yet another accolade for "Dead Man
Walking." The film has been presented with the Humanias
prize in the film category. The prize honors entertainment
writers for authentically communicating the human experience.

The fire in "L.A. Firefighters" has been put out ... at least
temporarily. Daily Variety reports the Fox action series is
being pulled from the fall TV schedule, even before the
season gets under way. The show is in for retooling, say the
show's producers. Six episodes of the show ran this summer,
but garnered poor ratings.
You may have heard of casting actors in movies, but how about
casting an entire city? Ottawa, Ontario, has been cast as
Gotham City. The Associated Press reports the shooting
company for "Batman and Robin" will do outdoor sequences in
the Canadian capital.

Tina Turner is making a musical comeback. The singer's first
album in six years, titled "Wildest Dreams," is due to be
released in September.

Same song, different week. Celine Dion retains her grip on
the Billboard magazine adult contemporary singles chart. Her
track "Because You Loved Me" is number one and has been for
17 weeks in a row.
Charlie Sheen is back at work. The actor has begun principle
photography with Paul Sorvino and Heather Locklear in "Money
Talks." Shooting is set for Los Angeles.
Sean Penn and John Travolta are working together. The two
have joined Robin Wright and Gena Rowlands to begin work on
"She's DeLovely" in Los Angeles.
