Web posted at: 8:15 p.m. EDT(CNN) -- The most eagerly anticipated computer game of the year is suddenly available, but you can't get it at the software store. For now, the ultra-violent new shoot-'em-up from the creators of "Doom" must be picked up on the Internet.
Scrambling from level to level, blasting away at everything that moves: This is the brutal world of "Quake," the latest from Texas based id Software.
It plays much the same as "Doom," but is technologically enhanced. While "Doom" allowed as many as four players to blast away together on a level, "Quake" is now so advanced that hundreds of gunners can play together.
"Quake" has been criticized as being one of the most violent computer games ever, but according to Jay Wilbur, the Biz Guy (yes, Biz Guy) at id Software, that's not a problem.
"The only two groups that ever bring that up are the politicians and the press. The public really doesn't have a problem with it," Wilbur said.
"Quake" is being sold as shareware, so computer users can download the introduction package, which is about 30 percent of the entire game, off servers on the Internet.
Wilbur elaborated on the concept. "The idea is, if you see it and you like it, give us a call. We have more for you. Try before you buy. We feel the game is great."
