Mission Impossible


"Mission Impossible" Cruise-d to an easy victory at the box office over the Memorial Day weekend. Paramount Pictures says the film, starring Tom Cruise, earned more than $56 million between Friday and Monday. Altogether, the film has taken in well over $75 million in domestic box office sales.



Leslie Nielsen, the goofy detective from "The Naked Gun," will appear on stage this fall in "Darrow," a one-man drama about the famed attorney. Clarence Darrow may be best known for defending John Scopes, charged with violating a Tennessee law forbidding the teaching of evolution in public schools. Nielsen is currently starring in "Spy Hard".



Lightning may not strike twice, but another "Twister" could well be on its way. People magazine reports that Warner Brothers' brass are discussing the possibility of a sequel to the blockbuster thriller and are talking to actors Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt about also doing "Twister" 2.



Clapton




What is the first object you'd rescue from your burning home? Eric Clapton would answer: "my guitars." Fire gutted the singer's London home over the weekend, but not before Clapton managed to save the instruments. Clapton discovered the fire when he returned from an outing. No one was injured.



Some changes are on the way for "Seinfeld." TV Guide says comedian Jerry Seinfeld will no longer introduce each show with a standup routine. Co-creator Larry David is leaving, and Seinfeld said he won't have time to prepare the openings.



Actress-singer Cher says her days as infomercial diva are over. Cher told Entertainment Weekly she now realizes the infomercials were "devastating" to her career. Cher is staging a comeback with a TV movie and her new album "A Man's World." The album is due out next month.



Wilson



Carnie and Wendy Wilson are living a dream. Billboard magazine says their father, former Beach Boy Brian Wilson, is working in the studio with them. Carnie said she has been asking Dad every year to work with them -- this time, she finally got a "yes."



Nathan Lane





Stage and screen star Nathan Lane will star in several Broadway classics for the American Movie Channel's film preservation festival. Lane also will appear in promotional spots for AMC during the festival, June 30 to July 5. The spot began appearing in theaters last weekend.
