The new film "Emerald City" may not star Dorothy and friends, but look for actor Forest Whitaker to take the lead role. The Hollywood Reporter says the film about a lawyer who ends up defending himself will begin shooting in the fall. Whitaker directed "Waiting to Exhale" and had a key role in "The Crying Game."
In fewer than two months, Demi Moore is set to "reveal" her acting skills in the movie "Striptease" but not before a crucial scene will be re-shot. Producers will redo a scene considered too serious for what they call "a comedy."
Three of the entertainment industry's most talented women will receive some worthy recognition. Oscar winner Jodie Foster is one of three actresses who be honored with a 1996 Women in Film award. Angela Basset of "Waiting to Exhale" and Anjelica Houston of "The Crossing Guard" will join Foster June 21 in Los Angeles.
More trouble for actor Burt Reynolds. A bank in California has foreclosed on Burt's waterfront home in Florida, claiming the actor hasn't made his $8,500 mortgage payment since last August. A spokesman for Reynolds called it a cash flow problem that would be taken care of.
Didn't get enough man-eating animals the first time around? You're in luck. A sequel to "The World's Most Dangerous Animals" returns to television Tuesday night on CBS. Stacey Keach narrates this up-close-and-personal look at crocodiles, killer spiders, snakes, poisonous worms and pit bulls.
Actress Bo Derek may be afraid she's no longer a perfect "10." The actress is being sued by Warnervision Entertainment for not taking off her clothes and for backing out of a deal to appear in a cable TV movie that would have featured lengthy nude scenes. Producers are asking for $250,000 they say she was paid, plus an unspecified amount they say they would have earned from the film.
President Clinton will step off the campaign trail to appear in a made-for-TV movie. According to Daily Variety, Clinton will make a cameo performance in "A Child's Wish," a story about a family battling their daughter's illness. The docu-drama stars John Ritter, Tess Harper and Anna Chlumsky.
This year's Tony nominations were teeming with controversy over "State Fair," the Broadway musical that was a movie in 1945. The musical was nominated for a Tony for original score. But the decision was a political hot potato, because several of the stage production's songs came from other Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
Actor George C. Scott is said to be too sick to undergo questioning in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against him. Scott's doctor says the 68-year old actor suffers from a heart condition and that stress from court testimony could kill him. Scott's former personal assistant, Julie Wright, has accused him of trying to kiss and fondle her.
"ER," NBC's top-rated show, has a new director -- at least temporarily. Anthony Edwards, one of the co-stars, makes his directorial debut in the episode "Take these Broken Wings." It airs Thursday.
Elton John's closet is now open to the public, and its contents are for sale. The singer known for staging fund-raising parties for his AIDS charity is transforming a section of a Neiman Marcus store in Atlanta into "Elton's Closet." It will feature hundreds of Elton's stage costumes and items from his personal wardrobe. The charity sale begins June 4 and will be open for at least two weeks or until the collection sells out.
It may be just a rumor, but the Hollywood Reporter claims John Travolta and Barbra Streisand are talking about making a movie musical. Steven Spielberg reportedly also is in on the talks. Talk about a dream team.
