> ZAIRE'S MOBUTU, KABILA TO MEET WEDNESDAY
Zaire's government has called on its citizens to defend the
capital, Kinshasa, but also said it was "putting all of its
hopes" on peace talks Wednesday between President Mobutu Sese
Seko and rebel leader Laurent Kabila. Zairian rebels are
demanding Mobutu resign after 32 years in power, but he has
refused. South African mediators confirmed Wednesday's crucial
meeting was on track.
> SINN FEIN WANTS OFFICE IN BRITISH HOUSE OF COMMONS
Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican Army's political arm, made an
unprecedented request Tuesday, asking to set up an office at the
British House of Commons. Speaker Betty Boothroyd may block the
request as two recently elected Sinn Fein members have refused to
swear allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II.
> NATO CONFIRMS DEAL WITH RUSSIA
NATO confirmed Wednesday a deal has been reached with Russia on
plans to expand the Western alliance and allay Russian
opposition. The agreement follows talks in Moscow between Russian
Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov and NATO Secretary-General
Javier Solana. The agreement will need approval by leaders of
NATO countries to become official.

> PROSECUTION CONTINUES BUILDING CASE AGAINST MCVEIGH
Seeking to bolster witness testimony, prosecutors Tuesday focused
on hard evidence they say links Timothy McVeigh to the Oklahoma
City bombing. Jurors were shown the key to the Ryder truck used
to blow up the federal building, which prosecutors say McVeigh
left in the alley where he allegedly hid his getaway car. Jurors
were also shown blurry security camera footage that purports to
show co-defendant Terry Nichols driving by the area three days
before the blast.
> DU PONT SENTENCED IN SCHULTZ MURDER
Chemicals heir John E. du Pont was sentenced Tuesday to 13 to 30
years in prison for the murder of Olympic champion wrestler David
Schultz. In February, du Pont, 58, was found guilty but mentally
ill on a charge of third-degree murder in Schultz's killing.
Earlier Tuesday, the judge ordered du Pont receive treatment for
what she determined was a continued severe mental disability.
> OXYGEN GENERATORS ILLEGALLY HAULED ON CONTINENTAL FLIGHT
Seven banned oxygen generators were found aboard a recent
Continental Airlines flight, the Federal Aviation Administration
reported Tuesday. The capped generators were banned as cargo on
aircraft following the deadly ValuJet crash a year ago.
Continental issued a statement Tuesday saying the disarmed
generators were shipped accidentally by a vendor. The FAA is
continuing its investigation.

> PROTESTS DOMINATE TEXACO STOCKHOLDER'S MEETING
Texaco Inc.'s annual shareholder meeting Tuesday was a magnet for
those criticizing the company on racial and environmental grounds
and for its investment in Burma. Instead of gathering to discuss
the company's proposed stock split, shareholders in the White
Plains, New York, oil company were treated to banners and
placards calling Texaco "the star destroyer of the forests."
> APPLE ANTICIPATES POSTING 3RD-QUARTER LOSS
Troubled computer pioneer Apple Computer Inc. says it will take
even longer for the company to return to profitability. The
company is struggling in the midst of a turnaround that has cost
thousands of jobs. In its latest 10-Q filing with the Securities
and Exchange Commission, Apple said it "expects that it will not
return ... until at least the fourth quarter of 1997, if not
later."
> SABRETECH SUES VALUJET
SabreTech Inc., the company that ValuJet Airlines blamed in the
crash of Flight 592 last year, sued the airline Tuesday, claiming
that existing contracts require the carrier to indemnify it for
all damages. Although the National Transportation Safety Board's
final report on the crash has not been released, old oxygen
generators that SabreTech personnel loaded into the plane's cargo
bay have been suspected as playing a key role in the crash.

> RODMAN PULLS IT OFF AS BULLS ELIMINATE HAWKS
Dennis Rodman, a non-factor in the playoffs because of his
aggressive play and the apparent overzealousness of referees,
upstaged even Michael Jordan on Tuesday night as the defending
NBA champions beat the Atlanta Hawks 107-92 to win the series
4-1. Birthday boy Rodman couldn't stay completely out of trouble
-- he drew two technical fouls with 2:44 to play for his third
ejection in eight playoff games.
> SONICS' WIN CUTS HOUSTON'S LEAD TO 3-2
The Seattle Supersonics found a chance to stay alive in their NBA
playoff series Tuesday night, making a key defensive switch that
held the Houston Rockets to a 5-for-27 effort from the 3-point
range. Putting Gary Payton on Matt Maloney appeared to do the
trick, resulting in a 100-94 victory for the Sonics in Game 5.
The win cut the Sonics' deficit to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series,
with Game 6 set for Thursday.
> STEINBRENNER BOUNCED OVER ADIDAS LAWSUIT
George Steinbrenner was suspended Tuesday from baseball's ruling
executive council because of his lawsuit against the sport over
the New York Yankees' marketing deal with Adidas. After baseball
ordered the team to stop selling T-shirts with Adidas logos at
Yankee Stadium and told the Yankees to stop outfitting their
grounds crew in Adidas gear, the team and the sportswear company
sued in federal court in Tampa, Florida.

> FDA PANEL SPLIT ON OVER-THE-COUNTER CHOLESTEROL DRUG
A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has split 5-5, with
one member abstaining, over the question of whether Bristol-Myers
Squibb's Questran should become the first cholesterol medication
to be sold without a doctor's prescription. The panel of
scientific advisers voted 7-4 against the general idea of
treating cholesterol over the counter. The FDA is not bound by
the panel's votes but typically follows them.
> STUDY: MOLE ABNORMALITIES DETERMINE MELANOMA RISK
A new study, published in The Journal of the American Medical
Association, shows a person's melanoma risk may be best
determined by evaluating the size, number and appearance of moles
on the skin. A person with just one abnormal mole is about twice
as likely to develop melanoma, the most deadly kind of skin
cancer, the study shows. Researchers say those with 10 or more
abnormalities have a 12-fold risk.
> RESEARCHERS OK TWO-YEAR WAIT FOR PROSTRATE TESTS
Researchers say it's safe to cut the cost of prostate screening
of men over 50 by not doing it as often. A study in this week's
Journal of the American Medical Association says most men can be
tested every two years instead of annually. The research
concluded that while the discovery of cancer in some men will be
delayed, it's not likely the disease will become incurable in
that time.

> CLINTON MAY COMPROMISE ON ABORTION BILL
White House officials say President Bill Clinton could accept a
Democratic compromise to limit late-term abortions. The proposal
is an alternative to Republican legislation that the president
has threatened to veto. Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle's alternative
to the contentious abortion bill bans any kind of abortion if the
fetus is viable, unless the mother's life is at risk or if the
procedure will protect her from "grievous injury."
> GIULIANI'S RE-ELECTION COULD HINGE ON RENT CONTROL
New York residents -- angry with some Republicans who have
targeted rent control for extinction -- are out for political
blood. There are picket lines, and for weeks now community
meetings in New York City have been jammed with upset tenants.
Their anger may affect the political fortunes of all the state's
top Republicans, including Mayor Rudy Giuliani, up for
re-election this November.
> GOP WANTS TO LINK MISSING DEMOCRAT TO CHINA TRADE STATUS
House Republican Gerald Solomon says Congress should not consider
China's trade status until China produces Charlie Trie, a
subpoenaed figure in the Democratic Party's campaign money
scandal. Trie's attorney has refused to disclose his whereabouts.
Trie, a former Arkansas restaurant owner who has offices in
China, helped raise some of the $3 million in donations that are
currently under investigation.

Ellen DeGeneres is reportedly upset with ABC and hopes her hit
show "Ellen" won't be picked up for the new fall schedule,
sources told TV Guide. ABC, however, is expected to renew the

record ratings for the network when DeGeneres' character came out

> WB TO GIVE TOM ARNOLD ANOTHER CHANCE
Tom Arnold is getting a third shot at becoming a sitcom star.
Arnold will star in "The Tom Show" on the WB network this fall.
The network will premiere four new shows -- two comedies and two
dramas. It's also adding a fourth night of programs. Three shows
were canceled: Aaron Spelling's "Savannah," "Life With Roger" and
"Brotherly Love."
> RICHARDS JUSTIFIES 'SEINFELD' SALARIES
Actor Michael Richards, who plays the wildly popular Kramer on

fellow cast members weren't greedy in recent salary negotiations.
