Aide May Have Misdialed Phone Sex Line
(AP) -- A Democratic congressional candidate accused in a political ad of billing taxpayers for a call to a phone-sex line said an associate may have misdialed the number while trying to reach a state agency.
The ad that began airing Friday shows Democrat Michael Arcuri leering at the silhouette of a dancing woman who says, "Hi, sexy. You've reached the live, one-on-one fantasy line." But Arcuri's campaign released records showing the call two years ago from his New York City hotel room to the 800-number sex line was followed the next minute by a call to the state Department of Criminal Justice Services. The last seven digits of the two numbers are the same. Full story Problems Plague Election Administrators
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wendy Noren had all the voting machines she needed. What she lacked was the stuff that made them work. So the elections supervisor of Boone County, Mo., didn't sleep Tuesday night.
Instead, she worked furiously into the next morning, outlining a last- minute election plan for a county of 150,000 people, a plan that relied on pen and paper and hand-counted votes, and that's with the country's midterm election little more than two weeks away. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives on Saturday blasted the war in Iraq, saying the Republicans in Washington are burying their "heads in the sand."
"We will be dishonoring the service men and women on the front lines, as well as their families here at home if we simply stay the course. We need a new direction in Iraq," Diane Farrell said, speaking on behalf of the Democratic Party in the party's weekly address. Farrell is enmeshed in a difficult battle for Connecticut's 4th District with the area's long-time Republican congressman, Rep. Christopher Shays. Shays, a moderate Republican, has served the state's wealthy southwestern corner for nearly two decades. Weldon faces tough opponent, FBI probe
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Add this to Republican Curt Weldon's long list of re-election woes _ his very own October surprise. Earlier this week, FBI agents raided the homes of Weldon's daughter and a close friend, part of an influence-peddling probe into the 10-term congressman and his daughter's lobbying firm.

Bush: U.S. military regularly reassesses its approach
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush said America's goal in Iraq is "clear and unchanging" -- to win, but the U.S. military's approach on the ground is constantly under review.
"We will continue to be flexible, and make every necessary change to prevail in this struggle," said the president, speaking in the weekly Saturday radio address. He tackled the issue of reassessing tactics and strategy amid two key developments this week. A military spokesman in Baghdad said on Thursday that the Operation Together Forward crackdown in the capital isn't living up to expectations and is being reassessed. The spokesman, Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, said violence has increased in recent weeks. Also, top commanders were meeting with the president this weekend to review the military's work in war-torn Iraq, where the insurgent and sectarian violence persist. These developments, coming during the mid-term election campaign period, prompted a lot of talk that the U.S. military effort is failing and major changes are needed. Miami Archdiocese apologizes to Foley
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The priest whom former Rep. Mark Foley has accused of molesting him when he was a teen could face sanctions, the Miami Archdiocese said Friday while offering the embattled ex-congressman an apology for the priest's "morally reprehensible" behavior.
The Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office identified Foley's alleged abuser as Father Anthony Mercieca, the archdiocese said in a written statement. Sources close to the investigation previously told CNN that Foley named Mercieca as his alleged abuser. Full story Calif. candidate's office, home raided
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) -- For two days, a Republican congressional candidate had promised to explain how a threatening letter was sent by his campaign without his knowledge to thousands of Hispanic immigrant voters.
As about 200 people gathered Friday in front of his campaign headquarters seeking answers, Tan D. Nguyen was a no-show at his own news conference. Instead, 10 uniformed California Department of Justice police officers arrived with a search warrant and pounded on the glass of Nguyen's storefront headquarters. WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush is reviewing Iraq strategy with top commanders for a second day in a row as election-season pressure increases to make dramatic changes amid deteriorating conditions.
The president was to consult by video conference Saturday with Gen. John Abizaid, the top U.S. commander in the Middle East, and Gen. George Casey, who leads the U.S.-led Multinational Forces in Iraq. Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Bush's national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, were participating as well. Full story Feds Probe a Democrat's Relationship with AIPAC
