Is Texas big enough for McCain and Romney?

McCain campaigned in Oklahoma Monday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The day after Arizona Sen. John McCain opened up both barrels on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney over immigration, his hunting experience and reversing positions on key issues, the two men share common ground on the campaign trail in the Lone Star State.

The Republican presidential candidates are both in Texas today raising money for their White House bids. McCain is in Houston and Dallas, while Romney visits San Antonio, Dallas and Austin.

In a conference call with conservative bloggers Monday, McCain joked that Romney's solution to the immigration problem is "to get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn." The Arizona Republican also said he'd "wait a couple of weeks and see if the winds change and Mitt comes back around."

McCain made similar comments on camera later Monday at an event in Oklahoma City.

And while Romney's spokesman fired back at McCain yesterday, Romney is expected to be asked to personally respond to McCain's comments at a media availability this afternoon.
