Gonzales sends mixed signals on role of his departing deputy

Gonzales said Tuesday it was McNulty who knew what was going on with the U.S. attorney dismissals.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Tuesday repeatedly placed his outgoing deputy Paul McNulty near the center of the controversy over the fired U.S. attorneys, saying he relied heavily on his approval.

Gonzales praised McNulty who announced his resignation Monday, and told reporters at the National Press Club "I'm really going to miss him".

But the Attorney General also said it was McNulty who knew what was going on with the U.S. attorney dismissals.
