Edwards wants role in GOP debate

Edwards addresses a town-hall meeting in Portland, Oregon Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards wants in on tonight's Republican presidential debate.

The former North Carolina senator has submitted a question for consideration by the debate's organizers: "Has the Bush doctrine of a Global War on Terror backfired? Does the president's focus suggest a fixed enemy that can be defeated through a permanent military campaign or do you think we need a broader approach as many military leaders believe?"

Under the format of the debate, members of the public can submit their suggestions for what the candidates should be asked via the web site Politico.com.

Edwards has made the existence of a "Global War on Terror" an issue during campaign stops this week. And at last week's Democratic debate in South Carolina, the former vice-presidential nominee was one of four Democrats who did not raise his hand to indicate they believe there is a "Global War on Terror."
