Clinton calls for 'shared prosperity'

Clinton outlined a plan to strengthen the middle class

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- New York Sen. Hillary Clinton outlined a broad economic plan in a speech in New Hampshire on Tuesday aimed at strengthening the middle class by calling for shared prosperity and more affordable health care and education.

"I believe that our government can once again work for all Americans," the Democratic presidential candidate said. "It can promote the great American tradition of opportunity for all and special privileges for none."

Clinton criticized the Bush administration for giving tax breaks to huge oil companies, no-bid contracts to companies like Halliburton and tax incentives for companies that outsource jobs. She said she would reverse those policies, along with publicly scrutinizing highly paid CEOs' paychecks to encourage fairer salaries in the workplace.

"I believe people are fed up with policies of past six years," Clinton said. "So many people I've talked to just want hit the restart button on the 21st century and redo it the right way. And I agree with that."

Clinton also said part of the core of her plan would include making college and health care affordable to all Americans.
